Kate, the Union Flag Table (Before & After)
Kate (After) |
Meet Kate – she’s youthful, modern & British. Some would have you call her “Catherine” but Kate is more fun, right?
This is how Kate started:

And here’s the top:
Top (Before) |
As you can see, she was in need of a little makeover (unlike the Duchess of Cambridge). I washed the table down and did two coats of clear shellac.
You all know, that we love all things British in our house – my hubby being English and my kids being half. I just can’t get enough of Blighty. You may remember the union flag bureau I did for my son’s room, but I wanted this to have a more modern twist, but be subtle too.
I painted the bottom half of the table in Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in French Linen. It is a really lovely color and is almost a mushroom color, a brown grey. Lovely, lovely color. Then I did ASCP in Old White on the top. Luke followed these instructions to tape the top for me. We opted to do the white first this time because it only meant taping once.
Using Frog Tape |
We used Frog tape for this one. The yellow tape is for delicate surfaces and I liked it better than the Scotch delicate surfaces tape. There was less bleeding and pealing.
All taped |

Love her! I did a Union Jack table not long ago, which I almost named Kate 🙂 It ended up being a “him” named “Union Jacques”, because of the French style of the table :)(You can see him here: http://aheartfulhome.blogspot.com/2012/07/meet-union-jacques.html)
I do love the Duchess of Cambridge, though, and her table namesake! 🙂 They are both very elegant and fresh!
Super groovy!!! I love love love it!!
Thanks, Christine!
Beautiful job! I will never tire of painting union jacks ( on anything )
Hugs,
Suzan
Just stopped by from the linky at the Dedicated House. I love love LOVE that table! So great. I’m going to be starting a Union Jack quilt soon. Great job!
Beautiful job on the table. Such a great makeover.
This is a beautiful take on the Union Jack motif, Danielle–I like the subtle colors, and I think it’s perfect the way it is. Love the curvy legs, too!
I have one of your “old” tables in my basement. Now you have a beautiful new union flag table and I still have the old ugly table in the basement! Want to stop over? Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – you helped make the party a success!
love it!! such beautiful colors; GREAT job!!
Hello Danielle, I am sending you a big round of applause from England, what a good job you have done with your Union Jack table. I love the subtle colours you have used. I bet it takes pride of place in your home. Best Wishes Daphne
Thanks, Daphne! My English hubby loves it 🙂
I like it! A lot!! I came over from Miss Mustard Seeds linkup! I have a question – why did you do the shellac coats before the AS chalk paint? Just curious!!
This came out fab!!
I did one on an old round oak table with almost the same colors! (you can see it under gallery).
I like the way you taped only once! How did you do the measurements?? It seemed like it took me hours to tape and measure mine.
Great inspiration! Love this project!!! It looks great this way, maybe later if you want a change, you can distress then??? I am a new follower of your blog and invite you to join mine as well, would love to see you there! http://flourishwithavintageflair.blogspot.com/
I’m in love with this table… I’ve seen it at a bunch of parties, and finally clicked on it, cause I couldn’t take it’s cuteness anymore! I think I just didn’t want to click and get super inspired… 🙂 Come party at my blog, if you want, but really I’m just commenting on how amazing this looks!
Ooh! This is my fave Union Jack project I’ve seen! Nicely done; I think the colors are what really set it apart. Great name choice for “her”, by the way. Perfectly appropriate. Would you consider sharing this here?

I think the flag looks great in muted colours Danielle. It makes me want to do something similar !
