Now to share some fun I’ve been having with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint.
Mustard Seed Cabinet (After)
Like many of you who read the blog, I’ve been dying to get my hands on some of her milk paint. I’ve been following Marian’s blog ror quite some time and am always inspired by her painted pieces, her photos and her writing.
I thought this little cabinet would be the perfect candidate for her yellow “Mustard Seed Yellow”. This is what it looked like before:
Before
It is actually a very special cabinet made by my friend’s great grandfather – a one of a kind heirloom piece that has been handmade. It just was looking a little brown and tired. How about some sun-shiny yellow to make it shine?!?
I got my MMS Milk Paint from the Sea Rose Cottage. When the package arrived I felt like a little girl on Christmas morning. Wow, it is so beautiful. I know I’m talking about paint, but Marian’s packaging really is beautiful. From the labels:
Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint
To the tissue in the boxes:
Mustard Seed Yellow Milk Paint
To use the milk paint you need to mix it up yourself with warm water. I opted to mix it with a stick rather than my new blender.
Mixing the paint
As you can see it is quite alot thinner than some other paints. Here’s how it looked after the first coat:
After the first coat
I ended up doing two additional coats. I was particularly excited (and a bit nervous) about the unpredictability of the paint. I didn’t add the bonding agent because I wanted it to peel and crack – I wanted to see how it would self distresses. I left it over night and had dreams that it was going to all peel off. It didn’t. It distressed mostly around the edges and on the drawers. I was hoping for some more flaking and peeling, but it didn’t happen.
Distressing
I love the differences in color, the small cracks and the distressed wood. I also love the warmth that the hemp oil added to the top that I stained with Special Walnut stain:
MMS Hemp Oil
I sealed the whole piece with two coats of MMS Clear wax which went on so easily. Here’s how the final piece came out:
Distressing
Wonderful rustic knobs from Anthropolgie:

I love that, like this yellow bowl filled with shells, the cabinet has a time worn look.
Stained top with hemp oil and chippy bowl of shells
It looks like it may have always been this way:

What do you think about the new cabinet? To my lucky readers – the prize Nancy is offering you is wonderful (wish I could win!) Good luck on winning such a wonderful prize!
This Giveaway has now ended. Congratulations to the winners.
