She’s a dainty and delicate beauty from the 1920s. She wasn’t looking so pretty when I first saw her:
Before
Her white paint job wasn’t the best and she was filthy:
Before
Nothing a good wash couldn’t fix! I really wanted her dark wood top to be restored so I consulted Miss Mustard Seed’s website to figure out how to strip paint. Her tutorial is so helpful. Marian recommended this paint stripper:
Strypeeze Paint Stripper
Strypeeze is a biodegradable paint stripper and didn’t smell bad at all. I did it out on the deck just to have more fresh air. I waited for the desired time and this is how the paint looked, almost a crackle effect:
Stripping Paint
I couldn’t contain my curiosity of what the wood would look like underneath that horrible white paint. I used a paint scraper and carefully ran it along the surface. This stripper worked great! It was so easy to use. I discarded the pealing paint into an empty Illy can. I’m happy to report her wood is absolutely gorgeous:
Stripping
That was after the first time with the stripper and I decided to do a second time to get the rest off. If you look closely you can see gold leafing. I left some on to add to the character of the piece. After all the paint was off, I lightly sanded, washed with alcohol.
Down to bare wood!
I then stained with Minwax in Special Walnut and sealed with four coats of hemp oil. Annabel was then painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Duck Egg Blue (my favorite). I lightly distressed her and sealed with two coats of clear wax.
I added an antique crystal knob:
Crystal Knob
and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Primer Red for inside the drawer:
Her warm wood is glowing again:
Refinished wood
All her little details really stand out now.
What do you think of her? I’m donating Annabel to The 2013 Scituate Food Pantry Benefit which is being held at the Maritime Center in Scituate on Saturday, May 18th. I encourage as many as possible to attend and would love you to bid on Annabel, your support of the auction could help so many lives in our local community. Annabel and I look forward to seeing you there!
As you know, I love anything beachy or coastal. Weathered shingles, pieces of driftwood, chippy buoys, starfish and conch shells. I also really LOVE old,…
Annabel looks like she spent a day at the spa, she looks refreshed and serene with her new look. Love that you stripped off the crackle and stained her top, the dark stain with the light blue is perfect.
Fabulous! I love that blue! I wish you were nearby, Danielle. I have two pieces that I’m dying to paint – but so do not have the drive to do it. Maybe I need to come to Scituate with a big truck. LOL!
I love it! Beautiful color choice. I’m visiting you today from Stone Gable. I’m co-hosting a Linky Party (opened Tuesday) and would LOVE for you to add this. I hope you get a chance to stop by my blog, leave a comment and Link Up, too! ~ Megin of VMG206 Join me each Tuesday and Friday for my Link Up Parties!

Annabel just looks gorgeous after. I really like how you helped the top become beautiful again. Great Job!! I also love the chair that’s sitting there too, so pretty. Visiting you from Funky Junk Party.
ooollaaallaaa what legs, what style, she is magnifique. Loving that table, she is a beauty. Now if I could just find a table like that somewhere. I love different items but can rarely find them here in Grand Junction, CO area. Then if I can find something it’s so ridiculously expensive. Ah well, maybe in another life. Beautiful job on the table, she’s reincarnated. Always good to see a beautiful wood top saved.
This turned out SO pretty Danielle! I’m definitely going to have to try that stripper, because I haven’t found one yet that actually works very well! Thanks!!!
I have an almost identical table Danielle and I too left the top unpainted. I have to say,I do prefer Annabel’s colour. She is a beauty. Thank you for sharing her at Shabbilicious Friday. I’m featuring her today.
Oh Annabel is quite lovely! She should bring a good price. What a lovely little table!

Love this, Danielle! So worth the effort of stripping the top, it looks like a different piece than what you started with.
