Autumn Mantel 2013

Happy Monday!  I’m so excited to share our autumn mantel.

This is the first time I’ve decorated the mantel in our new home and it was so much fun.  It has a different feeling to our old mantel with the rich dark wood and it is much bigger.
When I think of autumn and the change of season from summer, I can’t help but imagine long, lazy Sundays curled up by the fireplace, book in hand and a steaming cup of tea by my side.  In this happy picture, the kids playing happily with legos, the dog laying nearby and perhaps the aroma of a delicious roast in the oven.
The aged book pages behind the mantel are actually hiding an enormous mirror that we will take down at some point.
Before
Who knows what is under there?  As you all, know I’m starting work on the dining room today and I didn’t want to be working on two rooms at the same time…
My friend Lucy over at Craftberry Bush inspired me to cover the mirror with book pages.  Conor, my youngest, was laughing as ripped pages out of an old literary dictionary and taped them with frog tape over the mirror.
I actually love how it adds texture and an aged patina.
My mantel reflects all I love about autumn.
Pumpkins.
Painted pumpkins and fabric pumpkins.
Much loved books piled high.
Dried hydrangeas in the their beautiful hues of purple and tan.
A much loved clock that my parents gave us for our new home.
Chalk painted candle sticks in my favorite shades – Duck Egg Blue and French Linen.
An antique mirror that I found for a $1 at a yard sale. I knew I’d find the perfect place for it.
I already owned many of the elements, all but two pumpkins from the Dollar Tree which I painted.  I’ll share this with you on Wednesday!  So the whole mantel cost me $2 to create!

Love this, Danielle! I was dreading fall but now that it’s here, I have to admit I love the colours and warmth of this season. You brought that all to life on your mantle perfectly.

What a lovely fireplace, and you’ve dressed it perfectly. Love all the different elements like the feathers and wire pumpkins and using book pages like that is a brilliant idea.

Your mantel looks so pretty, love all the touches. I am a pumpkin person big time. Love the white ones and the green ones that I think may be gourds.

Very nice touches and I really like your clock on the mantle. I have an old Seth Thomas that belonged to my father that I put on the mantle. Take off the mantle. Put on the mantle. 🙂
