How to Make Ice Luminaries (Seasons of Home: Winter Edition)

Brrr!  It certainly feels like winter again here.  It snowed yesterday afternoon, all night and it is still snowing as I post this.  When I think of winter, I think of snow, ice and cold.  So I thought I’d share how to make ice luminaries with you.

How_to_Make_Ice_LuminariesMy kids loved making these.  I have to admit Luke and I did too!  Who wouldn’t love filling balloons with water and freezing them?

We got these balloons at Target in the party section.  They had to be green – my boys favorite color!  We filled them with water and then put them in the freezer.  BUT if you’re experiencing below freezing temperatures, like we are again, you can make your’s outside.  We left our’s to freeze for about 3 hours.  You don’t want them to freeze completely because you want to be able to put a candle inside.

So open the balloon, over the sink and empty out the water.  Now your luminary is ready to light.  I did our’s with the Ikea tea lights – I have so many!  But realized the tea lights make a chimney and also can be sooty, so it may be better to use LED tea lights.  So wish I had all the snow that is falling now when I took these photos!

The luminaries were so pretty.  I think they would be gorgeous lining a walk way to greet your guests.  Or outside in a crate if you’re having an outdoor winter party  or friends over for ice skating in your backyard.

Those are cute. When we lived in the old historical section we all put ice luminaries outside on Christmas eve. I love them for parties, too! Great idea about the balloons!!!! xo Diana
