Planning a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
I partnered with Royal Design Studio on this post, I used their products to create a festive Cinco de Mayo tablescape.
Can you believe May has arrived and, with it, one of our favorite holidays?!? Cinco de Mayo!
My little guys LOVE tacos, burritos, quesadillas, rice and mock cocktails!
We celebrate Cinco de Mayo every year.
I have a few ideas if you’re having your own Cinco de Mayo Party or if you’re just celebrating with your little ones.
Why not make some festive placemats and trivets, you can do this with your kids!

Cinco de Mayo Placemats
Materials
- Chalk Paint® in colors of your choice – I used Napoleonic Blue, Paris Grey and Louis Blue
- Artisan Enhancements Top Coat
- Otomi Folk Art Furniture Stencil by Royal Design
- Stencil Brushes
- Paper Towels
- Painter’s Tape
- Ikea Cork Placemats and Trivets
Method
Step 1 – I first planned out where I wanted the colors on this playful print. I knew my boys were going to love all the animals and thought several different shades in blue and gray would be nice and subtle for a celebration in our sunroom. I wrote a cheat sheet on a print out of the pattern.
Step 2 – I poured out small cups of paint and got a stenciling station organized. I had plenty of paper towels on hand to blot the brush and I also taped the stencil in place with painter’s tape so it wouldn’t slide.
Step 3 – Once all the placemats and trivets were dry I applied one coat of Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat to seal and protect.
This top coat dries pretty quick, be sure not to put it on too heavy, it can discolor.
DIY Tile Coasters
These were a little trickier than the placemats and trivets.
Materials
- Square White Tiles from the Hardware Store
- Royal Design Studio Talavera Tiles Wall and Furniture Stencil
- Sharpie Oil Based Paint Pens, Medium Tip
- Painter’s Tape
- Adhesive Cork for the back
These tiles are pretty slick so it is important to tape the stencil. There are six tile designs included in the Talavera Tile stencil set so you can make all different coasters.
Method
Step 1 – Tape the stencil on the tile, I found it helpful to put the four tiles around the tile I was doing. Then I outlined with the paint pens.
Step 2 – Fill in the color with the paint pens. Allow to dry.
Step 3 – Once dry, cut adhesive cork to fit the backs of the tiles.
I had heard that you could fire them in the oven but this ended up being a disaster.

I whipped together this tablescape with mock margaritas – I like taking French lemonade from Trader Joe’s and squeezing in the fresh lime juice with fresh limes inside.
If you’re hosting a Cinco de Mayo party, don’t feel like you have to make everything from scratch! The mini tacos are also from Trader Joe’s and my boys love them!
The chips were also store bought, but I LOVE making my own guacomole and salsas and Paleo friendly tacos.
Easy Guacamole
Ingredients:
- 2 Ripe Avocados (feel them, if their soft to the touch, then they’re ripe)
- Juice and zest of one lime
- A bunch of cilantro, roughly chopped
- Diced White Onion
- Several Grape Tomatoes, halved
- Jalapeno Pepper, diced (optional)
- Pinch of salt to taste
Roughly mash avocado and mix all your ingredients together with it and add jalepeno if you want a little heat. Serve immediately with chips for your cinco de mayo fiesta!
This really is a fun idea whether you have just your little ones or a whole crowd. If you enjoy this post and are planning a celebration you might also like these for your party:
