DIY Kids Picnic Set (and a Giveaway)

Are you ready to build something that your kids will love? I’m so excited to share today’s post with you.  We designed a really fun cedar table and benches for our children and created full build plans for  www.buildsomething.com and Kreg Tools. I’m also excited that my friends over at Kreg have a really fun giveaway for you too, but more on that a bit later, first, this brilliant set.

It’s awesome and our boys love it!

You may remember last year that Luke built an outdoor table with two benches for our deck. The table and benches are cedar and we used our Kreg Jig K4 to create them.  This set has brought us so much happiness, both as a family and when we entertain friends.

Outdoor Cedar Table and Benches created by Finding Silver Pennies. You can find the build plans for that here and here.

Since last year, we’ve wanted to created a mini version for our boys who also love lazying outside in the summer sunshine. We knew we wanted to make the set out of cedar as it has stood up very well in the elements and is very sturdy. It’s also affordable!

The boys love eating and playing outside so the table and benches had to be sturdy enough for two busy boys and their friends. We decided to make the design a bit different than our grown up version.

The legs have a classic picnic style, using cross having joints, which were easy to create.

The nice thing about cedar is it is sturdy but light enough to move around the yard. Last night we pulled up the benches to surround the fire fountain while we celebrated Father’s Day.

Luke actually built the whole set in an afternoon with a little help from us!

Since then the boys have been very busy out there enjoying tasty snacks and meals.

I actually caught Poppy trying to steal marshmallows. That dog has a sweet tooth!

This picnic set is also great as a creative space.  Both my children are great artist and love to draw, so it creates the perfect work space / artist studio.

I have a feeling we’re going to enjoy many craft afternoons out here this summer!

I’m excited to share the full plans with you over at Build Something, a site dedicated to building!  You can see the full plans here. Their site is great and it has lots and lots of build plans for you.

Building and creating things for our children is our favorite thing! Do you think you’ll give these plans a try?

Okay, I have some more exciting news. We used the Kreg Jig K5 to build this table and benches and we LOVED it! Kreg has kindly offered one for a giveaway!  Yay!  We loved this jig because, like all Kreg Jigs, it’s easy to use.

What sets the K5 jig apart from their other jigs is:

  • There is a platform to support longer pieces of wood
  • The drill bit set up tool is much easier to use
  • The ratcheting grip  is so much faster to set up
  • Clamps for repeat drilling make building faster
  • We also love new storage

Do you want to win one of your own?  Follow the Rafflecopter prompts below to enter:

Love both your little people picnic set and your big people set! The simple lines and function are just what I need in my back yard and I think this is something we could tackle- with the help of a Kreg Jig K5 ??!

I remember having a pint-sized picnic table when we were small. I think it’s an awesome idea for kids to have their own table. If I won I would gift the Kreg to my niece because her husband makes things for the home in his spare time. A table set would be perfect for their little boy and twins. Thank you for a chance at this generous giveaway!

I would love one of these thing-a-ma-JIGS!!! I have seen so many people using this, and I want to get in on the action. Making things with wood, even if it’s just a box, would be great. If I don’t win this, I will probably eventually get one. Thank you for the opportunity to win!
