DIY Mulled Wine Kit (Free Printable)
I LOVE handmade gifts. I really do.
The gifts that my husband has built for me (for Christmas or other holidays) or the macaroni wreaths the kids have made mean so much more to me than something really expensive.
We used to make a lot of gifts when we lived in the UK for Luke’s family and one year we did a mulled wine kit. For years, I’ve wanted to share this idea on the blog but always ran out of time. You know how crazy and frenetic the holidays can be.
This one is a little nicer because we made the box from scratch and I love how it has an old farmhouse look to it.
This would make a great hostess gift too if you’re going to any holiday parties or staying at someone’s home for Christmas or New Year. The great thing is mulled wine is perfect all winter if you live somewhere cold, like us!
Alright, here’s how to make your own:

We bought nice wood because I knew I wanted to stain it and for it to be rich. My friends at General Finishes sent me some water based wood stain and I love the color of this Antique Oak stain. It really made it look like aged wood.
Isn’t it amazing how rich the stain made the oak? I sealed it with their High Performance Top Coat in flat.
Step 1 – Cut your wood. 1 13″ piece, 2 12 3/4″ pieces and 1 12 7/8″ piece (the 12 7/8″ piece is the sliding top), 1 5 1/2″ piece and 1 5″ piece. We cut our wood with a compound mitre saw.
Step 2 – Along one long edge of the 12 3/4″ pieces and one edge of the 5 1/2″ piece using a router, cut a quarter inch groove 3/16″ deep so that the top of the groove is 3/8″ from the edge. It’s much easier to do this if you have a router table.
Step 3– Take the 13″ piece on the router table, cut a 3/16″ deep by 3/8″ wide groove around the whole piece. On the 5 1/2″ piece cut along the perpendicular sides (the same groove as above), inside side edges as you can see below. On the 5″ high piece, cut two grooves down both the short sides.
Step 4 – Glue and nail together.
Step 5 – Stain your box. I used General Finishes Antique Oak water based stain and sealed it with high performance top coat once it was dry.
Step 6 – You’ll need a way to open your box, so I thought sticking on a beach stone would be nice since we live at the sea. I used RapidFuse by DAP and I was so impressed by how quickly it bonded and cured. Wow!
I got some at Haven Blog Conference and will be definitely buying more. It works on so many different materials. You can see it drying here and it dries clear:
If you don’t want to build a box from scratch you can by a ready made box like this one.
Step 7 – Once everything is dry, place something to line your box. I used some natural material but you can use moss, shredded paper, tissue paper or anything else you’d like.
The wine is a nice full bodied wine.
Step 8 – Stud orange with cloves and place the wine, cinnamon sticks and studded orange in gift box.
Step 9 – Time for the gift wrap! I kept it simple with some twine and fresh boxwood.
I wrapped it all around the box and attached this fun free printable, click here for your gift tag. I printed it on cream card stock. The gold scissors are my favorite for gift wrapping (they are by Nate Berkus).
Oh, I added a few cinnamon sticks to the outside too.
This gift smells amazing! I made myself hungry taking photos. Yum. Cinnamon and cloves, but I didn’t open the wine!
I hope you’ll think about making this DIY Mulled Wine Kit for family and friends! It really is a heart warming gift.

So clever, and beautifully crafted? I really like the little stone as a “pull.” xo
