5 Ways to Style a Chippy Basket
It’s no secret that I love old things – the chippier the better! I found the most amazing basket last weekend at Bent Nail Farm Antiques Barn Sale. There are so many possibilities with baskets. Today I’m excited to share 5 Ways to Style a Chippy Basket.
It feels like it’s been ages since I “found” a treasure out antiquing / yard sale-ing AND I couldn’t wait to start using my new find.
I have a weakness for baskets because they’re so versatile.
I also have a weakness for that color paint. That pretty blue. I have it on our blue shutters, the table in our sunroom, and the pretty cabinet in the dining room. When I see that shade of blue, I’m drawn like a moth to a flame….
This basket was $20 and was missing a handle, but I didn’t care. To me it just adds to the charm. Alright, you get it. You get WHY I had to bring this home. Now that it’s home what to do?!? I have ooodles of ideas. Read on for more!
5 Ways to Style a Chippy Basket
(this could also be called 5 ways to style any old / vintage / antique basket)
1. Fill it with vintage fishing floats
I collect fishing floats – as you notice they are also that beautiful shade of blue. See more ways to decorate with that color blue! I also found some unique fishing floats on antiquing in Maine.
I thought these floats looked so pretty in our sunroom in front of the couch:
or next to my favorite spot to read with a cup of coffee. I love getting up early on Saturdays and Sundays and sit here before the rest of the house gets up…
The chair is from Ikea – The Poang – and is probably the most comfortable chair EVER. The fishing floats just gleam in the sunshine.
I, of course, had to try this look out on the back steps (which are brand new – reveal post coming soon).
Sweet Poppy wanted to get in on the photo shoot:
Can you believe she just turned 12 yesterday?
2. Fill the Basket with Hydrangeas
Clip hydrangeas from your yard. Our Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas have turned the prettiest shade of cranberry.
The color looks so romantic with the blue of the basket.
A basket like this looks so pretty place on that center of a table. You’d of course need to bring it in during inclement weather.
The arrangement should last a week or more, especially if you remove the leaves from under the water level AND cut the branches at an angle
3. A pretty spot for magazines and books
I LOVE magazines and reading books. Here’s an example of using this as a magazine holder.
I brought the basket out to the pool house. These chairs are so comfortable! A perfect reading spot!
4. A Place for Faux Flowers
Don’t have any real flowers growing? No worries. You can take a faux arrangement from Target, Ikea, HomeGoods etc and place in the basket. This arrangement was originally from Balsam Hill.
For this I stacked some melamine plates inside the basket.
This pool house is filled with some great ideas – you might like to learn more about the shiplap walls, the butcher block counters and the slat fronted benches.
5. Fill the Basket with Dried Hydrangeas
Our limelight hydrangeas around the pool are also a gorgeous color! I couldn’t resist clipping a bunch to place it the basket.
I wanted these flowers to dry naturally so I placed a bowl inside without water.

I love the chippy basket filled with the glass floats the best! It looks beautiful inside your home and on the new steps! Also, I would love to know where you got the chairs around your outside table . . . please.
Hi Mary, I’m so glad you enjoyed this post! I love the glass fishing floats. The color is so lovely. The chairs and table in the pool area are by Nautica and I found them at HomeGoods. You can see more about that set here: https://www.findingsilverpennies.com/my-favorite-sources-for-teak-furniture/. The other chairs on our back patio are from Target but they no longer sell them anymore.
