More About Cinco de Mayo
- Is an annual celebration held on May 5th and celebrates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.
- Cinco de Mayo does not celebrate Mexican Independence Day which is celebrated in Mexico on September 16th.
- Cinco de Mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico. Schools have the day off.
- Peubla hosts Mexico’s largest celebration for Cinco de Mayo. This is where the battle happened in 1862.
- Los Angeles hosts the largest celebration in America. The first celebration happened here in 1863 to honor brave Mexicans who fought.
