When I came across this table, I thought it would look so sweet painted.
Rock Maple Table (Before)
It is probably from the 1930s but I really, really didn’t like the formica table top (it just looked so shiny). But I loved the wooden legs. I found out while researching this piece that they started using formica with wood in the 1920s, which surprised me I thought it was more recent than that.
Recently, I’ve been noticing painted pieces with natural wood. I love that look! Here are some of my favorites from other blogs:
I thought the Rock Maple table might be a fun piece to try this look on. I got out my ASCP in Old White and did a rustic finish on the top to make it look like wood. Then added two coats of clear wax and dark wax. The dark wax went into the nooks and crannies I created. Here’s how it came out:

Here’s a close up of the rustic top:

If you didn’t know, you would think it was real wood. I love working with Annie Sloan’s chalk paint for this reason! I love how the paint can really transform furniture. I love the mix of paint and those warm colored maple legs:
Here it is half open. It opens to a full circle table. I think it would look so sweet with either some wooden chairs or industrial metal ones in a kitchen.
It would also be perfect as an accent table with your favorite flowers from the garden on top.

What do you think? Do you also like the mix of paint and wood together?
It is no secret how much I LOVE to paint furniture. It is my outlet away from the world. I paint to de-stress, I paint to transform ugly ducklings, but…
I LOVE the table! The close up picture of the table top with the wooden leg is truly inspiring!!! And you just made my day featuring my desk on your post, thank you so much 🙂
I had no idea that Formica was used so early! Very interesting. Painting is always an education! Love how you used the texture on this piece. The flower arrangement is fabulous too.
I do like the mix of wood and paint on furniture, and you did a fantastic job with that table. I love ASCP! I am your newest follower. I hope you can visit me sometime too 🙂 I would also love for you to share this at my Linky party that is going on right now called Rustic Restorations Weekend. http://homespunhappenings-tammy.blogspot.com/2012/06/rustic-restorations-weekend-party-8.html
Hi! Found you via MMS – very nice transformation. I will be doing two tables for a client next week, where I’ll be using some Chalk Paint on the aprons and the legs – but leaving the top wood. I love that look. The wood gets to shine more becuase of the color underneath (and vice versa for the colored legs). I think both look better when mixed! I have an old table like yours that I found at a garage sale when I was living in Washington State. I have to try your recipe. Thanks! I am following you…hopefully… Read more »
I do enjoy seeing the two tones. It makes it fun and you can always change it up later if you change your mind. Found your post at Twigg Studios. Hope you’ll stop and see me at Quirky Vistas sometime. Liz
I really LOVE how this table turned out. Great idea, to leave the natural wood legs. Thanks for linking up at Doodles & Stitches and thanks for the great inspiration!
I think its great~I just got a table with the same fake top but wooden legs~this is a good option. Mind if I share this?
Definately a great mix – wood and paint, especially when the wood is so good !

Such a pretty update, Danielle! I have to get on board and try AS paint!
Definitely a fan of this look; and I’m with Pam- I need to get my hands on this paint!
I’ve just started mixing wood and paint and like the contrast. This table has a whole new, stylish life! ~ Maureen
