Birch Candle Holders

Birch is such a lovely wood. I thought it would be fun to create some birch candle holders for the upcoming winter months and holiday season. This little DIY was so simple and only took us a few minutes.

I’ve actually wanted to create something with some old birch logs we had in the basement for quite some time. You may remember that these logs were in our fireplace before we redid it last year.

 I love birch logs with their silvery, papery texture and I thought they’d be a wonderful addition to our winter decor.

Today marks the kick off of Krista’s Seasonal Simplicity tour for Christmas and a bunch of friends are sharing simple DIYs and Christmas crafts today. All the ideas are at the end of this post.

Here’s how our candlesticks came out:

We created a few different varieties: a long tea light holder, tea light candlesticks, and a few for tapers. I love them all mixed together. I can’t wait to share how to make them below.

Making Birch Candle Holders

Long Tea Light Holder

Materials

• Table saw
• Birch Logs
• drill press
• 1 1/2 inch Forstner
• tea lights from Ikea

Method

The bottom of your log needs to be flat so it doesn’t wobble, we used a table saw to trim the bottom of the log.

Using a drill press we created 5 spaces for our tea lights. We used the 1 1/2″ Fostner drill bit. This type is important because it creates a flat bottom for the tea light. You don’t want to drill too deep as you don’t want the flame to be exposed to the wood.

Allow the holes to cool a bit before putting your tea lights inside as the wood gets very hot.

Tea Light Candlestick

For this version, we used the table saw to make the bottom flat and the tops parallel. We used a drill bit to drill into the end grain. This wood is harder to get through then the side. We used the same drill bit as above.

Birch Log Taper Holders

For this version we cut one log into 3″ pieces making sure they were flat on the bottom and the top. Luke didn’t have the right drill bit for the drill press, but he did have one for the brace. You want to make sure the tapers fit snug into these candle holders. For our tapers (which were from Ikea) we used a 13/16″ auger bit. The only one we had was for a brace.

Make the hole 3/4 – 1″ deep.

Here’s how they came out:

For some of the photos, I used faux fur for staging but as this is flammable I wouldn’t recommend placing these holders on faux fur. I’m sure you all are careful with candles but only use these when you are present in the room as they are wood and also flammable. Here’s a few more photos:

The small fairy lights are from Amazon and I love them for holiday decor. This type is great because they have a teeny tiny battery pack and I love the warm copper wire.

I think these will look gorgeous on a wintery mantel and also across a simple tablescape.
