DIY Birds Nests

Inspired by nature I decided to make found and foraged DIY birds nests to celebrate spring.

I thought this would be the perfect project to share for the Seasonal Simplicity hop organized by my good friend Krista.

In my home and my design work I’m always so inspired by the outdoors. We have many birds building nests in our yard but I never want to bring them in because birds return to their nests. This is a cardinal nest on our back deck and it served as my inspiration for DIY nests.

The first thing I did was go outside and collect branches, cuttings, and interesting sculptural shapes.

Lichen covered branches.

How to Make DIY Birds Nests

Materials

• Found and Foraged Branches
• Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
• Spanish Moss
• Cadbury Mini Eggs
• Wax Paper

Method

Step 1 – Lay out branches and materials.

Step 2 – Place a piece of wax paper on your work surface to start building the framework of your nests.

Step 3 – Create a base layer of sticks, using hot glue to stick them together. Layer different materials – grasses, branches, pods – in a very organic way.

Step 4 – Place Spanish moss in the center to make it look more realistic.

Step 5 – Add some eggs. I used Cadbury mini eggs (I don’t need many excuses to open a bag of them), but you can make some out of clay.

Step 6 – Enjoy your DIY Birds Nests!

I made a little video to give a bit more explanation.

If you have any wisteria I found that I was able to work with this into a more round shape because that plant structure was more pliable.

How to Use Your DIY Birds Nest in Your Home

I perhaps took WAY TOO MANY PHOTOS of these nests. I thought I’d share a few ways you could use them in your home decor.

There was something I loved about this image:

Placed on a chippy cabinet

On a Book Shelf or Welsh Dresser.

I always change up our decor for the seasons on our Welsh dresser and I had fun playing with these nests.

Look how delicate the flower tops and seed pods are!

Stacked on top of a book.

That greenery is just placed on top for a “pop” of spring color 🙂
