Five Fun Fall Arrangements
I thought I’d share five fun fall arrangements to celebrate the new season! The flowers blooming in our yard are spectacular this September.
“Happiness held is the seed; Happiness shared is the flower.”
– John Harrigan
This is exactly how I feel about flowers and I bet if you look around your yard you could create some really beautiful and festive arrangements.
I awoke on Saturday morning with the sun and the birds and went to my garden to clip flowers. It’s best to cut flowers in the early morning before the heat. I was surprised to find bees asleep on John and Conor’s sunflowers. It really was such a peaceful start to the day. I’ll share a few floral ideas and some tips, but I think the most important thing is to have fun and play with your floral arrangements.
Here you can see all the flowers I clipped:
I ended up cutting so many I was able to create five different fall bouquets and each vessel makes them feel different and unique.
Flower Arranging Tips
- Cut flowers early in the morning before the heat of the day.
- Plunge flowers into water and store in a cool place until you’re ready to create your beautiful arrangements.
- Replace water daily and trim flowers to help them “drink” the fresh water.
- Sunflowers can turn the water very quickly. Cut them and put them in ice water to prevent the sap from leaking from the stem. Do not cut them each day. – a tip I learned from Floret Farm.
- Woody branches need to be trimmed up the stem, like your cutting in fourths to help the water reach the flowers.
- Vessels are so fun to collect and play with – Ironstone, galvanized and crocks give a farmhouse feel while clear glass and rope feel more coastal. I love using jars, urns, vintage containers and pottery.
- To extend the life of the flower add plant food.
- Floral foam has been linked to cancer so try to use floral frogs, branches or tape when needed to support flowers.
- Snips are useful. I use them for cutting flowers but also use them in floral arranging. Make sure you remove all leaves and thorns from lower part of the flower that is in water or it will make your water murky.
- Add height to centerpieces with ornamental grasses, weeds or seed pods. I’ve also used feathers and fresh produce.
- When creating bouquets and centerpieces think of where the flowers will be placed. Do you want to see the entire piece or just the front and base position of flowers and fillers based on that.
- More wonderful inspiration can be found here and here (affiliate links).
Okay, I think that about covers it for tips. Shall we get to the flower arrangements? WARNING – I took far too many photos, but maybe they’ll make you happy looking at them.
Sedum and Silver
I love the simplicity of sedum and enjoy watching it go from pale green to a pretty shade of pink from fall to summer. We have it growing down by the pool but I love using it inside. It looks so classy in silver. It lasts a very long time cut.
I love how classy just a single type of flower can look in a vase or vessel. I love long stems of hydrangeas by themselves, in a crock, or ironstone pitcher. Lilies all alone or peonies all look beautiful. Speaking of hydrangeas and crocks…
Hydrangeas and Vintage Crocks
I used this vintage crock as a base for this pretty summer into fall arrangement. Our limelights are looking gorgeous right now. I also included sedum (as pictured above) and a few vanilla strawberry hydgrangeas (they’re the pink hued ones).
These colors are so happy and have a vintage romantic quality to them. They will last a long time in this crock. I brought this one in and put it on the chippy blue cabinet in our dining room.
When I think of fall, I can’t help but think of sunflowers. My boys both love them so this one devoted to their favorite flower. They let me borrow some from their sunflowers plants.
Autumn Sunflower Bouquet
Can you see the honey bee that decided to visit this one?
For this bouquet I knew I wanted John’s sunflower to be the focal point so I built the arrangement around that. The vessel is a galvanized metal bucket that’s made to look old but is actually new. This shape is great for long stems.
The smaller sunflowers are my son Conor’s. We planted dwarf sunflowers and they crossbred with normal height ones and they come back every year.
This arrangement includes: limelight hydrangeas, a large sunflower, Conor’s smaller sunflowers, greenery from our front yard (I don’t know the name), and fronds of seagrass.
We decided to place this sunny bouquet inside our sunroom.
A perfect way to welcome fall!
Okay, let’s play a bit more. Now we’re going to mix in some fun Zinnias, which I only just discovered this summer. The more you cut, the more grow! Is there anything better than that?
Autumn Zinnias and Feathers
I used a simple glass vase from Ikea, which is hand blown. I wanted the focal point to be the pretty flowers. In this arrangement I’ve used a mix of sedum, zinnias (queen lime variety), limelight hydrangeas, basil, rose hips, and feathers.
The basil is such a nice fragrant addition.
I love all these colors together.
Finally, one that is a little bit more colorful.
Coastal Zinnia and Fountain Grass
I used a simple glass vase with netting to give a coastal look. The zinnias are giant dahlia mix and are a riot of bright pinks. They are so happy and whimsical.
I started with a frame work of branches of sweet autumn clematis which is so fragrant.
Then I added in vanilla strawberry hydrangea, rose hips, fronds of different grasses, sedum, and zinnias.
The result is very wild and warm. Perfect for a fall tablescape outside or in. We enjoyed this outside and now it’s on our dining table.
I know I shared a lot of photos, but I hope this was helpful in giving you a few ideas of using items from your yard to create beautiful arrangements to enjoy. I really got lost on Saturday morning in the beauty of these flowers.
