A Downton Abbey Tea Party

How to Throw a Downton Abbey Tea Party

“There’s always time for tea”

As many of you know I lived in England and my husband is English.  Tea is very important in this culture. The kettle is put on when there is trouble or when there is a celebration and “high tea” is quite a celebration in itself.

I really, really love tea parties with proper cream tea but I hadn’t hosted one until yestereday.  I invited a few friends over to celebrate the new season of Downton Abbey which starts in January. Yay!  I actually sent everyone this little invite:Downton Invite NEW DATE

I painted the tea cup in watercolor and created a little invitation.  If you’d like to print off your own with your own party details you can click here for the free printable.

It was rather a gray day yesterday here in Scituate and quite the perfect day for a Downton Abbey Tea Party!

I created a runner out of paper doilies and used adhesive dots to hold it together.

The Table Layed for Tea

It was the perfect backdrop for such a festive celebration.

We enjoyed fresh baked scones with Downton Abbey jams. To create a Cornish Cream Tea you split the scone open and spread with jam and top with clotted cream.

I made mini lemon tarts using mini shells and the lemon curd.

Lemon Tarts and Shortbread Cookies

I added some fresh blueberries on top. So delicious. I fell in the love with lemon curd when I first started dating Luke 16 years ago. 🙂

We also enjoyed Walker’s Shortbread and mince pies (they remind me of Christmas in England).

Cucumber sandwiches were also served:

But it wouldn’t be a tea party without the tea, now would it?

Be My Guest

We tested out all the Downton Abbey Tea from Republic of Tea.  I love the Christmas Tea and the Estate Blend as I’m partial to Earl Grey.

These tins are lovely and make such great gifts this time of year.

For my tea party “proper dress was required”.  Luke even got dressed up and looked very much the part of Lord Grantham.

Jenna looked most the part (you can see the gift bags I created for my friends with pretty Downton paper, Downton Crackers, shortbread and a limited edition mug from World Market).

Jenna even has a Downton Abbey Tattoo. Oh, yes, that is a real tattoo. 😉 If I was giving away prizes for best dressed she would win!!!!

This was such a lovely, lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Tea Party Celebration

We chatted about the holidays about politics.  We shared stories and, of course, we talked about Downton Abbey.

You served some of my favourite foods. I love lemon curd and blackcurrant jam is my all-time favourite. I make shortbread and mince tarts at Christmas as well. It wouldn’t be Christmas without them. These are all standard in Canada as well as Britain. What a nice party!
