A Fresh Start for an Old Coastal Home

It’s no secret how much I LOVE old homes. I think you all know, especially how much I love our old home. I’m so excited to share the fresh start for our old coastal home.

As you know, with old homes comes necessary maintenance. I adore our wavy glass in the original windows, the weathered shingles, and our old front door. When we first moved into our home we painted the trim, shutters, and door. Well, it’s been 10 years, I know can you believe it??? When we painted our trim back then the windows really all needed to be reglazed but we couldn’t afford it so we had them reglazed this time around and it’s made a huge difference.

Want to see how our home looks right now with a fresh coat of paint?

Painting the Exterior

For a long time we’ve said we’d learn to glaze the windows and do that ourselves BUT we never learned and never got around to it (life has been busy with a growing businesses and two teenage sons!). We decided to hire professional painters to help us paint the the home and they were amazing.

If you’re local I highly recommend MA Falvey. Mark and his team were amazing to work with. Mark has over thirty years experience and his team were incredible – they spent so much time in the heat prepping our home for painting – they spent two days scraping the old paint.

They repainted all the white trim, the front door, and our shutters. His crew were so nice and such and such skilled painters. It’s amazing what a difference a fresh coat of paint does.

Paint Colors

  • Our front door and shutters are – Buxton Blue by Benjamin Moore (in high gloss)
  • Moorglow in soft gloss white for the trim

I love this color combination so much and didn’t even think of changing it.

Buxton Blue is such a classic coastal blue and it looks beautiful in every season. I love it in the summer, but it also looks so pretty with a dusting of snow and fresh greenery in our window boxes.

Other Exterior Updates

We made a few other exterior updates after having the home painted. I will write other posts to go into detail about these but they include:

  • new plantings for the window boxes
  • new onion light
  • Boston Ferns in our vintage urns
  • new flag and flag pole

Luke also washed all the windows, storm windows and screens. He used Deionized water and no soap for this, if you’re looking for a trick for sparkling windows.

A View from the Pool

I thought you’d like to see the side of our home. I took this from the pool area looking at the home. If you look closely you can see Luke on the patio. This was Sunday morning and we were reading the paper.

Our star was very rusted and I planned on just taking it down, but the painters offered to paint it for me. I went with a gloss black and love how it looks:

What do you think? Do you like the black star? Would love to hear. The room with all the windows is our sunroom and where I enjoy painting. You can see more of my watercolors in our online shop (if you’re new around here).

What do you think of the fresh look for our old home?

Congratulations > life is too short to not use pros if possible. Trending in my area is removing the non-functional shutters on double windows (always looking for logic for that other than “ we all do it that way, always have “). I feel that shutters only on single windows looks much more authentic and having interesting window treatments on those windows can really invigorate the facade of a delightful home like yours.
