A Nautical Bedroom
One of my favorite rooms in our house is John’s. Our 6 year old’s bedroom is every beach boys dream. It has nautical flags, stripes, whales, sandcastles, ships and the lure of treasure and shipwrecks. Won’t you step inside and take a look?

It didn’t always look like this. 5 1/2 years ago, when we moved in, it looked like this:

The above photo is a view of where his bed is now and this is how across the room looked:

The walls were a very bright purply blue which we decided to cover with Sweet Bluette – a lovely, soft blue which reminds me of the most perfect beach day. Any color looks great with it! Strong sea faring colors like reds, navys and bright yellow found in these nautical flags from The Land of Nod.
Pennants, pulleys and castles (oh, my)! |
Over the years we’ve collected many items for his room: sandcastles, pillows, ships, pulleys (complete with original chippy finish).
His bedroom furniture was mine growing up and was in need of some TLC. You may remember his Union Flag Bureau I painted last year. You can read about that makeover here.

I’ve just finished his bedside table in MMS Milk Paint in Tricycle. Here’s a sneak peek (I’ll be sharing a before and after post, next week):
MMS Tricycle Bedside Table |
It really deserves it’s own post as John and I collaborated together on it!!!!
In his room he also has a wonderful pine chest from 1780. Luke and I picked it up at Brimfield in September. I wrote about our adventure here. We refinished the chest ourselves:
It really is a gorgeous piece. The couple we bought it from were so knowledgable and told us all we needed to refinish it ourselves. I particularly love the knobs and the details. It even came with the original key for all the brass key holes. I can’t help but think of the history this piece holds.

These chests say New England seaside to me. I hope that John will treasure it, and be able to pass this one down to his children, and then their children.
I found these amazing rugs from Target in their new Threshold line. If you look closely you may see that they are rag rugs made with jeans. My denim-lovely son thought that was so cool. I loved them and picked up three. Not bad as they were only $12.99 a piece. The life preserver pillow is from The Land of Nod (Nonni and Grampy gave it to him along with his bedding). I found the nautical lamp, which is made from antique parts, at Salvage Chic Antiques.

Vintage oars from 1940 with its original grey blue finish and chips, a nautical lamp I was given by another vendor at Main Street Antiques and this amazing ship round out his room.

That is for sure a beach boy’s dream ~ I love every bit of it Danielle! Sometimes it can be hard to incorporate a nautical feel with red, white and blue and not make it feel too Americana, but you’ve done a great job balancing new, antique, etc. to make it a great space for John. 🙂
What a great boy’s room, Danielle! All the thoughtful details you incorporated are perfect!
Love how you have assembled things over time to make it a perfect and very special room for John. It is already filled with great memories! The dresser looks stunning and certain to be one of those special pieces that will always find a home with John.
Thanks for your loving comments, Nancy!
What a great room, love the flags.

I too am a beach lover, but the opposite coast. My color palette is primary colors so I am drawn to anything bright like your son’s room. I used scraps of art canvas to make some pillows last summer and looking at your post gives me an idea to paint nautical flags for some pillows.
Thanks for the inspiration.
Love that Pine Dresser and your Union Jack makeover. It’s too cute!
Thank you! x
