A Perfectly Imperfect Marble Topped Cabinet
I’m always on “the hunt” and I found a perfectly imperfect marble topped cabinet.
As many of you know, we’re redoing our bedroom and I’m looking for a cabinet for this space. I brought this sweet cabinet home.
I found it at my friend Colin’s barn. I think he’s had it for a bit because there’s some damage. I got it for $70.
I thought about painting it but so many of you on Instagram were horrified and our oldest son said, “Mom, you can’t paint that it would be perfect in the living room. The wood would be beautiful with our columns and the fireplace.”
John helped me position it to it’s new home:

He was right. It’s too nice to paint. Look at the gorgeous period details!
The carved detailing and raise paneling. The pretty key holes.
The pretty brass hinges:
I adore these pulls. They are made of ebony and are Eastlake which dates back to the 1870s.
This piece has a lovely curve to it and I’m not sure if I captured it properly in the photos.
See how the sides have a rounded edge?!?
It has such lovely wooden casters, too.
So where are the imperfections? Well, inside the drawer is broken and one of the feet needs a little repair, but the worst part is the marble. It’s cracked. I think someone tried to tighten a mirror or backing to it and cracked the marble.
But you know what?!? I don’t mind imperfect things. I actually embrace the imperfections. I covered the crack with a gorgeous terra cotta plant pot from Italy (this one is similar, the one I bought is no longer in stock) and stacked my favorite books next to it!
It adds to the patina I think.

The Ironstone bowl was $5, how could I resist that?!? It’s great for a vignette but also functional for pita chips or popcorn. 😉
Hanging above the cabinet is a lithograph by Dendy Sadler called The Time Honoured Guest. It used to hang in my parents’ restaurant so has special meaning to me.
The built-in next to it picks up on the dark wood of the frame and of the new cabinet.
What do you think of our new marble topped piece?!?
I seem to have an affinity for them. I have one in our front hall and one over by the TV. I can’t resist marble…
I’ll be sharing our winter mantel soon along with the plans for John’s bedroom and a few more antiques I’ve picked up.
I adore antiques too! They make a room and give you that ‘collected’ look that makes a room cozy and warm. Your piece is perfect for that spot! Can’t wait to see what else you’ve found. 😊
Sharon,I completely agree! That “collected” look is what makes a home feel warm and inviting 😉 Excited for you to see more of my finds soon.
It’s gorgeous! I’m glad you listened to your son. It would be a sin to paint that gorgeous piece.
Yes, John was right! 😉
John was right. The piece looks perfect in your living room! 🙂
Doesn’t it look perfect in there?
Beautiful Piece! I have the exact one , however, mine has a marble backsplash. I have it in in my master bath!! Love the warmth and character they add to a space! Love you cozy home!!
Oh, Judi, I’m so glad we have twin cabinets. I bet it looks stunning with the marble backsplash in your bathroom! Would love to see!
Oh, I love it ALL! It’s perfect, and so is that print from your parents’ restaurant. It looks like it was made for your home!
Thank you, Rita. Really loving this new addition to our living room. So glad you like the lithograph as well. xx
Out of the mouths of babes. I love it!
Yes! So glad to be enjoying this beautiful piece in our home!
The quality and workmanship still out way the damage. I love the wood grain, rounded edges (my fav) and the ebony drawer pulls. Good insight John!
I agree,Sandra, they sure don’t make furniture like this anymore. Aren’t the rounded edges so different and I love the ebony pulls. I’m so glad John convinced me 😉
What a fabulous find no worries about that crack makes it all the better!
It’s gorgeous!
