A Touch of Fall in the Kitchen
Simple autumn flowers add a touch of fall in the kitchen.
Apple picking season is here and so is dahlia season. Soon we’ll take the kids apple picking. It’s something we love to do each year. Even when we haven’t gone picking, I keep a bowl full of apples in the kitchen for snacks.
These dahlias are pretty gorgeous. I tried growing my own this year but had no luck with any buds. I’ll dig up the tubers and try again next spring. I think next summer I’ll do a whole raised bed for cut flowers (including dahlias). The dahlias in this vase are from Cross Street Flower Farm and we attended their first ever Dahlia Festival over the weekend. It was so beautiful to see rows and rows of pretty dahlias in all different shades and hues. If you want to learn more about dahlias, the Farmers Almanac has loads of information.
I decided to mix these dahlias with some eucalyptus from Trader Joe’s. They have bunches for $2.99 a bunch. You may remember I used similar dahlias and eucalyptus in the dining room and out on our back deck.
I’m not usually drawn wine tones but simply love these warm hues this year.
The oyster sign was an easy DIY from last year. The little stool is one from Ikea which I painted green. You can see both tutorials HERE and HERE.
I often get questions about cut flowers and prolonging the life of the bouquet. Here are some tips.
Tips for Cut Flowers
- Cut flowers once you bring them home.
- Make sure your vase or vessel is clean.
- Remove all greenery or leaves below the water line.
- Replace the water each day.
- Give a fresh cut to the stems each day, too.
Follow the above tips and the bouquet should last at least a week. Eucalyptus will last even longer.
That cabinet is original to the house and used to be in the dining room. The previous owner moved it. I decided to paint the inside Soapstone by Fusion Mineral Paint to add depth and also make all my white plates stand out. In the cabinet is a mix of Ikea white plates and vintage blue & white china and pottery.
Well, there you have it. A taste of fall in the kitchen. I’m thinking of getting some plants for the window boxes and maybe a few pumpkins for the front steps tomorrow. Have you started decorating yet?
I thought I’d include a full source list below just in case you’re wondering about any of the sources in our kitchen.

Hello! The flowers are beautiful. It’s interesting that they moved the cabinet into the kitchen. I wonder what was in that space before? And where in the dining room was it before? It looks like it always was there. I love your kitchen and I hope you don’t completely remodel it. It has SO much charm and goes with the rest of the house the way it is…except maybe the floors. I love the quarkie way the refrigerator is in the back porch area. That was very common in older homes because many were built before we had refrigerators .… Read more »
I’m so glad you like our kitchen, it is quirky. Ha! Ha! I’m not a huge fan of the dark floors – Max’s white hair really shows up on it. I dream of a Lacanche range with an island but that cabinet will def. stay where it is. The shadows you see is actually a jasmine plant on the peninsula. I love how it smells. It reminds me of our trip to CA as we enjoyed the fragrance of jasmine on our trip.
I love the colors of your bouquet, they are so pretty and of course i love that kitchen.
Thank you, Marlene. I hardly show our kitchen because there’s so much I wan to do with it but everyone says they love it as is.
In the kitchen you have a white bucket w/ kitchen tools inside; is that a chamber pot
