Betty Draper (Before & After)
Ooooh, are you a big fan of Mad Men like us?!? I’ve been going through withdrawal since the season finale. You probably think I’m now going to launch into the plots and sub-plots of this fantastic 60s inspired show. I would love to. I could spend hours chatting about this show I love so much, but instead I’m going to share with you my Betty Draper chair!
Here’s how the chair started:
(Before) mid-century modern chair |
I loved how the legs were rounded infront and square in back, but I wasn’t really loving that horrible drab 60s fabric. I don’t think Betty would have loved it either.
ASCP Old White |
Floral fabric for new seat cover |
(After:) Betty Draper Chair |
I’m such a happy girl because I got so much painting in this weekend – fun lamps, a very feminine mirror, a barrel table in Antibes, a pale pink headboard and started on a playful coffee table. Can’t wait to share all of the above with you.

Wow!! Betty is ready!! Mad Men is a show I hear a lot of people love, but have never seen it. I should check it out. Have a great week!!
I’ve never watched either, but your chair is fabulous, Danielle!
LOVE Mad Men and hope Betty comes back more after her child is born! Love the chair, too – it looks great!

Great makeover for Betty Draper! She must be a happy gal in her new dress!
You would have LOVED a store I went to recently in Hudson NY. Just about everything was from the ‘mad men’ era, and in fact, some of the items were used on the set (so I was told). I’ve never seen the show but I know it certainly has tons of fans. You did an amazing job on this chair!
Hi Doreen, that store sounds like so much fun! I think you would love the show!
It would be hard for me to give up Betty. You really did a great makeover and I LOVE the fabric you chose. Bet she’s feeling all dressed up now! Thanks for sharing your creative inspiration with Sunday’s Best – you helped make the party a success!
I love old white. It just makes everything look better 🙂 Great makeover Danielle!
Love the makeover! So elegant.
Thanks, Heather!
I was wondering if you could use chalk paint on cane. I have a similar chair that I just gave a mini-update this week. I’m contemplating painting it white too.

Thank you for sharing your project at Potpourri Friday!
Loving it in white Dannielle. Thanks for sharing at Shabbilicious Friday.
Looks lovely! One Question: Why did you give it 2 coats of shellac first? I’ve been using ASCP on a few things but haven’t read to do this first.
The two coats of shellac prevents any stain or bleed through. My stockist, Nancy Chace, recommended doing it on wood that has any worn areas or areas that look like it might bleed. Certain stains in the 30s or 40s had a dye which can bleed through the paint. I do it as a preventative especially if I’m selling the furniture. Hope that helps!
