Calm and Coastal Bedroom Inspiration
Calm and Coastal Bedroom Inspiration – woven rattan and grasses, warm whites, and shells. I’m so excited to share more about our principal bedroom plans with you!
In case you’re new to the blog, we decided to do our own “trading spaces”. Since moving into our home, our sons have shared a bedroom. They loved this space but as they’re growing (now 14 and 11) and with the need for remote learning we decided it was time for our home to work a little harder for us. They now each have their own bedrooms, Luke and I got their old bedroom, and our old bedroom has become a guest room / shared office space for Luke and me. The other week I shared Conor’s Sea Inspired Bedroom. Slowly I’ll be sharing the progress on all these rooms, but today I’m very excited to share our inspiration and progress for our Calm and Coastal Bedroom Makeover.

Calm and Coastal Bedroom Makeover Inspiration
Here is the mood board I created for our bedroom:
Before making any decisions, Luke and I lived with the space for three months. We tried several furniture configurations, too, as the room is quite large. You can see how it looked as the boys’ bedroom here, here and here. The bed will be the focal point of the room and will also set the tone for the space. I shared some coastal beds I was loving here. You guys weighed in on different ones you liked on here on the blog and over on Instagram and Facebook. I can’t thank you enough. This is actually the first time we’re investing in a bed of our own and it’s a big decision.
I’m a big believer in investing in quality and also making timeless design decisions. I’m designing our dream bedroom and so excited to share our process with you. We decided to make a private appointment with a designer at Serena & Lily Boston to see the bed we were considering.
I often wish I could move into Serena & Lily! Ha! Ha!
We met with Alice Harris at Serena & Lily Boston and really enjoyed the whole process and found her amazingly knowledgeable. If you’re considering buying from Serena & Lily and live near a Design Center I highly recommend a visit. Sometimes looking online and in the catalogue it’s hard to grasp the sheer size or light fixtures and the textures and patterns of products.
The Bed
We decided on the Balboa Bed. I’ve had my eye on this for a long time but wanted to see it in person before ordering online. I wasn’t sure I’d love the brass caps on the legs, but LOVE them! The frame is solid mahogany which is wrapped by artisans with rattan.
You can see the slats in the above photo and the intricate woven detail. We currently have a boxspring and mattress. So will now get rid of the boxspring and bed frame.
Something to consider if you’re thinking of this bed – it is not compatible with latex foam mattresses.
Here’s a look at the bed from the website:
Bedside Tables
My handy husband will be making our bedside tables from scratch and I will be finishing them. We’re still figuring them out, but want them wide enough to hold our shell lamps. These are very similar but I found mine at HomeGoods a few years ago when we did our original bedroom makeover. They will either be white oak with a limed wax or all white with aged brass pulls and space for books because we love read. Luke made me this bedside table a few years ago.
Vintage Dressers
We still love our bedroom dressers which I painted over the years. One has a chippy distressed finish while the other is painted in Annie Sloan’s French Linen. I might lighten the top on the chippy “Isla” dresser with a warmer wood tone and add a wash over the whole “Clifton” Armoire.
This is my dresser:
You can see the shell lamps above that will go on the beside tables.

Window Treatments
We plan on using white linen curtains from Ikea for our bedroom. I’m a big fan of these and have used them in varying shades throughout our home. We have them in beige in our living and dining room. The boys had them in gray in their shared room and we have them covering a few closets in white. I think they’ve updated this curtain so it’s now called Dytag. $60 for a pair of linen curtains is a great price!
We will also be adding woven roman shades with black out lining. I love the texture woven shades add.
Lighting
Lighting is an essential to any room plan. For as long as I can remember I’ve been IN LOVE with the Capiz chandeliers at Serena & Lily. Here you can see them displayed in the store:
Can you imagine having enough space to hang them like this? We don’t have super high ceilings in our bedroom so we’ve ordered the Capiz Scalloped Chandelier. The warm glow diffused through capiz shells will add a romantic and textured element to the room. The brass will also pick up the end caps on the bed. Here you can see it from their website:
We thought about the Cornwall brass sconces for either side of my dresser. We loved them in the store and you guys all know Luke is from Cornwall!
So pretty, right? BUT my shell loving heart couldn’t resist the Aptos Shell Sconces. I think I gasped when I saw them online and in person they’re even prettier. The shells are a pale blush shade and each hand strung. I also love the woven detail at the top.
They are so dreamy in person can’t wait to have them in our bedroom.
Other Elements
The walls will remain Simply White. It’s one of my favorite colors and looks so great with white or dark trim. We’ve used this paint in three rooms in our home and I often recommend it to design clients because it’s a warm white that goes with anything. In fact, I learned that Serena & Lily use it in their showrooms, too, for this exact reason. On the floor, will be the hide rug repurposed from Luke’s office. It will add a warm texture under foot. We’ll also be adding one or two arm chairs and the brass reading light from the old office.
Shop the Look
I can’t wait to hear what you think of our plans and I’m so excited to share our room progress along the way!
Just gorgeous! The lamps you’ve chosen are spectacular and so appropriate for your coastal room. Looking forward to the finished project.
Thanks, Judy. I’m so glad you like the selections. It’s been fun planning and searching for just the right look. xx
So pretty but way too expensive for me lol.
I think all your choices are going to be so beautiful, can’t wait to see how it all looks, perfect for your lovely coastal home.
Thank you, Marlene. Luke hung the pendant yesterday and I’ve been patching and painting walls today.
Very nice! Looking forward to seeing the finished space!
Thanks, Donna! We’re really excited about it.
