My house is a huge, huge mess right now. So much for streamlining, spring cleaning and a fresh new year! We decided to start work on some of our own DIY projects – redoing the closet in the guest room, antiquing a very GOLD mirror and I’ve been painting several of my own pieces in chalk paint. Things I’d been putting off for a LONG time. Nothing is completely ready to show you just yet….
Instead, I thought I’d share with you my last custom project from 2012:
Game Table (After)
Here’s how it looked before:
Before
Yes, it was very 70s! I know how much we all love knotty pine now! Ha! It was really scratched up too:
Top (Before)
This table was the perfect candidate for Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! I washed the piece down and did two coats of clear shellac to seal in the knots. My client, Tanya, loves bright colors and was really drawn to ASCP Provence. We decided to tone it down a little by doing a custom color of Duck Egg Blue and Provence. I love the results.
When painting the bottom I found the exact date the table was made! I love finding unique markings on furniture like that.
Then I did the other squares in ASCP Graphite and distressed to make it look like a time worn piece:
Top (After)
I distressed with a sanding block on the top and also with a wet rag on other areas of the table, then sealed it with clear wax.
Close Up of Distressing
Tanya just had her hardwood floors refinished and it looked so beautiful on them. I’m hoping they got to play lots of checkers over the Christmas holiday.
Is there anything better than finding gorgeous furniture at a yard sale?!? Yes, there is one thing better. Painting said furniture outside in the sunshine….
Great transformation! My boys would love to play chess or checkers on there! And I’m right there with you – the house is a mess but I’m still determined to stick with my get organized for 2013 resolution.
For the wet rag technique: take a viva paper towel (I like these the best b/c there is not texture on them). Before you’ve waxed the piece after the paint has dried. Take a damp paper towel and wipe the area where you’d like the wood to shine through. I also then take a dry towel and wipe up the excess water. Then wax as usual. Hope it works for you!
What a cool table! LOVE that color too!I have lots of things going on now too!Cleaning and projects keep adding up LOL!

Jeanine, thanks so much. Game tables can be so much fun! I’m glad I’m not alone in my messy house. x
Great vision, Danielle ~ what a cool piece!
It looks great. I don’t know about the wet rag technique for distressing, but I am going to try it.

Absolutely stunning! Love the color! This would be such a fabulous piece to have in a family room!
That color is great! Our house is a mess still…and I’m slacking on putting all those Christmas decorations away.
Looks great! Working on my resolutions!
I love the color, what a great project!
