Christmas Living Room

Today I’m sharing our Christmas Living Room! I know I gave you a glimpse at many spaces in our home, but today I want to share cozy living room with its creamy white walls and dark wood trim.

Oh my goodness, friends! I’m so glad to hear you all enjoyed our Christmas Home Tour last week as part of Jennifer Rizzo’s Holiday Housewalk. Weren’t all the homes AMAZING?!? If you haven’t had a chance to take the tour yet, I highly recommend enjoying it with some festive Christmas music, a pot of tea and a crackling fire.

Here’s a peek at our living room decorated for the holidays:

Dark Woodwork and Furniture

Our living room is really one long room that I’ve divided into two rooms. When you first enter our house from the entry is our sitting area by the fireplace.

To give you a better idea you can see this reel of our entire living room.

The leather couch and Moroccan poufs pull out the dark woodwork to our home which is original. The creamy white walls (painted in Benjamin Moore’s Mascarpone) helped to make the space feel brighter.

I adore using old pieces like this marble topped commode. I realize this isn’t decorated with evergreens but faux ferns. I still think that works mixed in with traditional holiday decor. More about this marble topped cabinet – I store batteries in the top drawer and kids’ crafting stuff below. I found this out antiquing. These pieces add so much character to a room and also are lovely in bathrooms or as bedside tables.

Simple Mantel with Driftwood Garland

Living in an historic 1927 Dutch colonial I love to keep things classic but I also enjoy brining elements of the sea which is just down the street.

Original Dark Wood Mantel with driftwood garland and greenery

Our mantel is original to the home but we added the bluestone hearth and had the fireplace refaced with fossilized ocean floor. I love the look it gives to this space – like it was always there. The fireplace is gas and I love that we can just enjoy a beautiful fire by clicking a remote.

Mixing all different textures from natural stone, unlacquered brass, leather, faux fur, and oriental rugs makes a room feel warm and inviting!

I use the driftwood garland in all seasons and also love the pillar candles from Balsam Hill.

Here you can see the other side of the mantel:

The books are all antiques and I bought them because I loved the color and the gold embossed spines. The brass bell is from Native in Scituate Harbor and is made from recycled metal in India. You can see a video of the process here.

Adding Sprigs of Evergreen

Life has been pretty hectic – these last two weeks included – so I really wanted to keep our home decor simple this year. A simple branch of greenery can add so much charm to a room.

Cozy Fur Pillows and Throws

I LOVE to cuddle up here on the leather couch. It’s my favorite place to read by the fire.

On the back of the couch are fur throws from Ikea and the faux fur pillows are from DKNY from HomeGoods last year. This is my favorite faux fur throw (and it’s currently on sale!).

Sparkling Candles and Mirrored Surfaces

We actually moved the bar cart next to the fireplace to make room for our Christmas tree. You know what? I think I might like it here better than next to the couch!

I kept things very simple here – a giant pine cone, a faux Christmas tree from Ikea (from probably 12 years ago) and a tea light in a candle holder.

I love how it nestles right in that little alcove by the fire. What do you think should we leave it there? The fish print is by my friend Jeanne Stewart who grew up in our home.

Slipcovered Couch and Wood Accents

I love the mix of wood and white. To me it blends old and new together so well! I LOVE white slipcovers – and this couch is so comfortable. We’ve had it now for a quite a while at really is wonderful to cozy up together with the boys and Max and watch Christmas movies.

As you can see I’ve mixed new and old furniture in this space. I love the carved coffee table which we’ve had for about 4 years. It’s stood up quite well to family life and pizza and ice cream in front of the TV.

The burled walnut dresser holds our DVD player and all our DVDs. I like to keep stuff like that hidden. Our TV hangs on the wall but I’m dreaming about The Frame TV – which looks like art hanging on your wall when you’re not watching it. Maybe Santa will bring it for me this year!

This antique dresser is decorated simply with frosted greenery, a giant pine cone, and antique fishing floats.

Special Tip: I save the giant pine cones, faux greenery, and garlands to use again and again every year!

A Simple Tree

Our tree is quite simple. It is a pre-lit tree by Balsam Hill and we’ve had it for a few years now. You can read more about it here and this is the one we have.

The ornaments on the tree are French Country (I’ve mixed various sets together) and I love using them on the tree but also placing them in bowls or on shelves. You’ll see more of that in in the dining room.

The candles on the tree were new last year. I found them at Scout Vintage on Cape Cod, but these are very similar. I love the extra sparkle they add.

The tree collar was new last year and we love it so much.

As you’ll see Max is perched at his favorite spot – keeping watch on the street.

Mixing Flowers and Evergreen

Finally I tried mix in some roses and I love how they look with evergreen. Our son was in a play and he had these leftover. I threw the evergreen in with it and love how cozy and understated it feels.
