Coastal Cozy Bedroom
I am so excited to share our coastal cozy bedroom with you! I know, it’s been two years in the making!
You may remember back in July 2020 we decided to trade spaces where we swapped rooms with our kids. Well, their rooms were completed first (of course) which allowed us to really take our time and make considered decisions for our bedroom. You can see Conor’s Sea Inspired Bedroom and John’s Teen Room.
I shared peeks along the way of our bedroom- my inspiration, new lighting, new window treatments, a lovely rattan bed, and the most comfortable swivel chair.
This room has taken me the longest to complete compared to any other in our home – with furniture delays and things being out of stock. I think it was worth the wait, though.
Well, I’m so excited because the bedroom is finally complete and I can’t wait to share these easy coastal cozy bedroom ideas with you!
What is Classic Coastal Style?
I’m in LOVE with coastal style, but not that kitschy coastal style full of buoys and knick knacks, but a New England Coastal Style with some touches of relaxed California aesthetic. First let me break down the elements of my coastal style – think creamy white walls, blue and white, lots of shells, leafy plants, cozy linens and duvets, beautiful art from watercolor paintings to coastal photography, and, of course, old upcycled furniture.
Updating a Bedroom
I fully believe a home should not be static. Home decor should ever be evolving to reflect a family’s needs. May will mark our 9th year in this home (our forever home). When we moved in this room had a partial wall and we made it the kids’ bedrooms. Conor’s room was the pink one and John’s room was the yellow side. Conor was so upset about having a pink room that he wanted to know why we hadn’t painted it when he slept during our first night in the home. We ended up covering the pink that weekend. Our boys were so little when we moved in and loved having the partial wall with a “secret” doorway. About 5 years into living here we gave their bedroom a makeover and took the partial wall down and redid the ceiling.
This was the boys’ coastal bedroom and modern workspace and an updated version of the boys’ room two years later.
Our boys loved this space and it worked wonderfully, up until the pandemic when they both were trying to learn remotely and share a room and workspace. It was bad. John was screaming at Conor to get out of his room!
Anyway, here you can see a Before & After from the day we moved in to now:
Why You’ll Love Coastal Style
- By nature it feels cozy and relaxed
- The textures are pretty durable and great for family living, even with pets
- This coastal look NEVER goes out of style
Elements of My Coastal Cozy Bedroom
I’m all about mixing high and low! Our bed was a HUGE splurge but we then used affordable curtains from Ikea and upcycled old furniture which we found either on the side of the road or at barn sales. I’m all about balance, which I’ll break down in this post.
Rattan Bed
One thing I knew for certain that we wanted was this beautiful rattan bed. It was a splurge for us but we’re still so IN LOVE with it. The woven texture adds so much warmth to the room and it is so well made. The weaving is hand done by artisans in Indonesia.
If you look closely you’ll see both our dogs who love our bed – Max is on the white duvet at the end of the bed and Poppy is under the bed. She actually loves the new bed because it’s a bit higher than our old bedframe.
This type of bed is a platform bed so we could get rid of our boxspring and place our old mattress right inside.
I love the brass caps on the feet as well, it just adds so much character and style:
Cozy Bedding
I have a few secret tips when it comes to bedding. I love shopping Target bedding, especially Casaluna cooling sheets, and Ikea for duvet covers, pillows and duvet inserts. The bedding pictured is Casaluna cooling sheets and a duvet cover and shams by Ikea.
Secret Design Tip for a Cozy Bed
For a queen bed to feel extra cozy use a king duvet and duvet cover. I just tuck the extra fabric under the pillows.
The Ikea bedding really stands up and is such a great price. I love their attention to good design, too. This duvet has a hand blocked feel on one side and a striped on the other, so you can turn the bed down to get a lovely coastal feel or you can change sides to give a whole new look to a room.
Protect Your Bedding
I actually have a second (cheaper duvet and cover) creating a French style “throwbed” at the foot of the bed for our dog. It protects our bed and makes a comfy spot for him to sleep.
Max loves this trick!
Shell Infused Lighting
I’m a huge shell lover, in fact, I collect boxes and boxes of shells. So I decided I wanted to use that as an element in our bedroom lighting. On either side of our bed we have lamps with a shell motif. I actually found these at Home Goods by these shell lamps are very similar.
Flanking our chipping dresser is shell sconces and they look so very romantic at night. We have them on a dimmer.
They are so pretty and delicate and quite different.
Above our bed is a capiz shell chandelier and it feels so grown up. I love the gold details mixed with the shimmer of the shells.
A Cozy Reading Nook
I love reading in our bedroom and I found the most comfy swivel chair. I can’t tell you how many stores we went to looking for something we both liked. Our bedroom is big but we live in an older home so sometimes it’s hard to find furniture that is the right scale. We love this swivel chair. I’ve created a little reading nook in our bedroom:
A simple marble top table from HomeGoods is perfect for a stack of book. Here are some I love to read and reread:
The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse is a favorite of our whole family. It really is such a beautifully written book if you need a pick me up read!
Closed-In Bedside Storage
We opted to use two old commodes for our beside tables. They’re actually different but I painted them to look similar using chalk paint.
Painting this old cabinet brought out the pretty details and highlighted the original hardware. I keep lotions and gift cards and photos in the top and I have lots and lots of books stashed inside. Having closed in storage makes our room appear tidier than if you could see all of that!
Luke’s bedside table is similar but not as detailed.
Adding Plants
I’m a huge plant lover and I think they instantly add a calmness to any room. In our bedroom I’ve mostly used faux plants except for this Monstera which really likes the lighting.
It’s a north facing room so I didn’t have much luck with palms and plants that like full sun. So I’ve used faux for the rest.
It really is amazing how much real and faux plants can warm up a space! The woven containers were a Marshalls’ find. Some of the plants were also from there.
Art That Tells a Story
Art makes a room. We had the most wonderful trip to California in 2019 and (while stuck at home when I was designing this room) I couldn’t help but think of that wonderful trip. I turned my photography into the California Collection. I’ve used two pieces in our bedroom.
California Photography
Above our bed hangs a panoramic of Clouds Over Big Sur on canvas:
Above our reading nook is a Beach Day at Avila Beach.
On our chippy dresser I framed some of my watercolor paintings, including this watercolor seascape free printable, and in our open shelves I have artwork from my friends and our son.
But art can come in all shapes and sizes. You can think about using other things to act as a type of art, too.
Mirrors
This bone inlay mirror adds light to our bedroom but also a natural texture. We have another mirror on the the closet door that also bounces light into the room.
DIY Coastal Hooks
I created these coastal hooks a few years ago. It’s a quick and easy project but also acts as functional wall art!
Straw Hat Wall Art
Speaking of hooks I created a kind of installation wall with all my straw hats. Functional and pretty!
I love wearing hats in the summer and have quite a collection so thought we could hang them to create a focal wall. I decided the spacing by placing them on the floor first. We used vintage brass hooks but you can use any hooks you have on-hand.
The brass hooks were used in my childhood home so have special meaning to me.
This piece of furniture I hand painted years ago with French Linen Chalk Paint.
This wall is so big that it really made the space feel so much more cozy!
Affordable Window Treatments
We opted for woven roman shades with blackout lining and simple long cotton drapes (that look like linen) from Ikea. You can more about our window treatments. Woven roman blinds add so much warmth to any room. I actually wrote a whole guide comparing woven roman shades.
A Soft Floor Covering
Finally, I have to share one last part of this room. I love jute and sea grass rugs but usually they aren’t very soft or easy to clean. Instead I decided to keep the hardwood floors exposed except for this hide rug:
It is so soft under foot and easy to clean. It actually makes the room look even bigger than it is!

It was worth the wait!!! All looks very costal and comfy. A great place to plop after a day at the beach. That room looks to be very large…nice. My favorite part is the bed. That is a beauty. I don’t know how you were so patient to let the boys have that room first!!!
Thanks for sharing.
I’m so glad, Josette! I LOVE our bed too and it’s so pretty in here at night with the soft shell sconces. Ha! ha! It really was sweet when they shared a room but I have to admit I love having this space now. xx
