Coastal Fall Home Tour

I honestly can’t believe summer has passed by and it’s now time to start thinking about fall! I’m excited to be sharing our fall home tour as part of Krista’s Seasonal Simplicity hop for fall.

If you’re visiting from Colleen’s beautiful blog (Lemon Thistle) welcome! I LOVE all her hand lettering projects. If this is the first time you’re visiting our home welcome! I’m Danielle! I share my home with my husband, two sons – ages 15 and 12 and two rescue dogs – Max and Poppy. Max may have made an appearance in some photos. Today I’m going to share most of our first floor with simple fall ideas. However, I thought I’d try something simple with tour. I took photos while styling each space so I thought I’d break down my process in the post. I’m also sharing a very short video at the end with some ideas – quick and easy 😉 I also wanted to share that as my sons have grown so has my decor. I think my style has become more simple and nature inspired. So you will see a few pumpkins but more antiques and flowers than pumpkins.

Okay, let’s start the tour!

Fall Front Entry

This is the room you come into from our front door. It was on this very spot I fell in love with our home’s dark woodwork 8 years ago.

The room is very much how it usually appears in every season with umbrellas ready for a sprinkle or passing shower (this year we’ve had a lot of rain)…

The floor covering is actually a floor cloth, I love that it looks like inlaid tile. It was much more affordable than adding tiles and can be rolled up if we want to change the look.

This is great with muddy paw prints or dirt / sand tracked in the front door.

Fall decor in here is a basket filled with faux figs by the stairs and a beautiful arranement on our marble topped dresser. This dresser holds all our hats, gloves and scarves. We each have a drawer.

Creating a simple fall arrangement

I love using vintage vessels. This is actually a crock. I put a vase inside to hold the branches and flowers upright. By placing a vase inside, you don’t have to use as many branches as if you put them directly in the crock.

I’m going to break this arrangement down for you. I’m using:

• Vanilla Strawberry hydrangeas from my front garden
• Seeded eucalyptus and silver dollar eucalyptus from Trader Joe’s – they have affordable bunches – I think $3 a bunch and it dries so nicely and smells amazing.
• Branches from our bridal wreath bush – add a fall-like texture

Tip: to make your flowers and branches last longer – always remove leaves that will be under the water line. It prevents bacteria growing in the water. Be sure to add additional water every day or so.

When arranging flowers I like to make them look very natural. I start with having the seeded eucalyptus hanging down int he front, then have the silver dollar branch up on the right side and fill in the larger blooms. Then I add the other branches.

You don’t want it to look too perfect!

Fall Living Room

I actually gave you guys a glimpse of this room last week. You can see our mantel here and how we’ve moved the leather playroom couch in here. The mantel only took me five minutes and I break it all down in that post.

On the mantel I’ve used faux branches and a real air plant. I’ve found that real plants don’t really like the heat of the fireplace…

I also had many questions about our fireplace. We did it over a few years ago. We painted the interior with black oven paint and had the front refaced in fossilized ocean flooring and used bluestone on the hearth. The insert is a ventless gas and it looks so realistic. Okay, let’s head over to the other part of our living room. It’s a long room so we treat it as two different areas.

You’ll see I’m drawn to Indigo for fall this year. Indigo pillows and lighter blue pillows are a great accent color on a white couch by the sea.

Oh, and there’s Max – our nearly 5 year old rescue. He’s a bit of a couch potato and this couch is his favorite spot. Poppy (our 11 year old lab / flat coat is outside), she just loves running around our yard and hiding under the forsythia bush.

The indigo pillows are new this year and I’ve used that same color in small votives I got at a thriftstore.

The marble links were from HomeGoods, the marble coasters stay out to remind my kids to use them ;), and I’ve used the same flowers in this space – hydrangeas, eucalyptus, and some of our Japanese Pieris. This bush is also known as the Lily of the Valley bush. I discovered while writing this post that this plant is poisonous. So if you have little ones at home I probably wouldn’t use this in an arrangement, but since my kids are older and our dogs don’t eat plants I think it’s okay here.

I just loved how the leaves are slowly changing colors.

The flowers are in an old candle holder. I melted the wax and poured it out. I thoroughly cleaned the container and love that I can use them as posy holders. You’ll see I’ve used these in the dining room which adjoins this room.

Fall Dining Room

Our dining room is just through these beautiful dark wood columns. It is such a lovely room. We enjoy breakfast in here together every morning and dine in here most evenings – otherwise we’re in the sunroom or out by the pool.

My husband built his beautiful table for me and the curtains and slipcovered chairs are Ikea. I shared everything in this post. You’ll notice my style is heavily influenced by England – I met my husband there during my Junior Year Abroad and we lived there for 5 years before falling in love with Scituate when we visited my parents. 🙂

This time of year can be difficult so we’re transitioning from summer to fall. For summer, I had these rattan votive holders and simple ironstone platter filled with shells out. To make it more fall I’ve added some white pumpkins and two posies.

There’s something so comforting to me about shells, pumpkins, and flowers. I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me… Do you find them comforting, too?

The above photo was an inprocess styling shot. I felt the Welsh Dresser needed more fall and greenery. I continued this theme over there – adding greenery and flowers to the pussy willows and adding more ecucalyptus and hydrangeas to the ironstone. This area always has my collection of Ironstone on it but I also like to showcase special pieces here.

I truly believe home should tell your story. This little shelf tells mine.

A few things with special meaning:

• the pewter plate from my parents’ restaurant I grew up working in
• the stacked ironstone bowls – a gift from Josette in Arizona. Hi, Josette! They have wonderful crazing on the inside
• the glass jelly jars that were a gift from my friend Matthew Mead
• the sailboat photograph I found last spring while antiquing with my mom
• the sweet striped jug I found antiquing with my mother-in-law in Cornwall
• the sweet little birdhouse, that came all the way from my friend Carolyn in Canada – Hi, Carolyn!
• some ruffled ironstone that was a gift from a sweet blog reader
• Finally, the jelly mold I found this summer!

That blue cabinet was a yard sale find. I think I got it for $20 and I painted it with milk paint. You can read about it here.

I always decorate this cabinet for different seasons. I decided to add some limelight hydrangeas which our turning a beautiful pink color. The mirror was in my parents’ restaurant.

Also, on this piece is a needlepoint my friend Karen surprised me with. She sent it from her home in Bainbridge Island in Washington state. She bought one of John’s note cards and made me this beautiful needlepoint from it.

Isn’t it beautiful? It really touched my heart this summer when it arrived.

Fall in the Kitchen

Our kitchen really hasn’t changed much since the spring or summer home tour. I have moved the little Ikea island around so the long way is facing you here.

As you can see the focus here is floral arranging.

I made the “fresh oysters” sign, click here to read about that. I love keeping all our plates and dishes in that cabinet. The kids store all their candy in the drawer on the top shelf.

You can see I was making up the little posies while takin these photos. I love using the candle holders for a second purpose once the candle is used up.

My boys are always starving when they get home from school. Yesterday we enjoyed this pumpkin cranberry bundt cake. I wish I could tell you I made it but I got it from our milkman – Hornstra Farms. If you’re local I highly recommend it!

I used some of that same eucalpytus on the cake stand to make it more festive.

Okay, the LAST stop on our coastal fall home tour! The sunroom. It’s just right through our back door.

Fall in the Sunroom

This room might look a teeny tiny different from our summer sunroom. I mentioned in that post we would be changing the look out here. I’m still waiting for a new table but here’s a little peek:

You’ll see those warm pinks and greens are making their way in this space from cuttings from our yard. I’ve used Sedum and Zinnias.

And the most comfortable couch – which our youngest camped on this summer.

I still have my coral and shells on display out here.

In time we’ll change the table. This one is just a little too big. it was actually broken when we found it. You can read more about the table here, chairs here and painting the floor here.

The branches are actually faux mixed in with real pussy willows.
