Cozy Fall Exteriors
Creating cozy fall exteriors is easier than you might think. Clipping some branches, bringing out some wine to enjoy by the fire pit or enjoying the late summer and early fall blooms.
Fall in New England is so wonderful and amazing, especially in September. Here on Boston’s South Shore it’s still warm enough to enjoy time outdoors. My favorite time is around 4pm when that golden light is strongest. I thought it would be fun to share how our garden and yard are looking this fall and some tips for creating cozy fall exteriors as part of Krista’s Seasonal Simplicity Outdoor Hop.
This year I’m embracing simplicity. In years, passed I’ve done cornstalks on either side of the door and LOTS and LOTS of pumpkins, but in this season in this year, I’m craving simplicity.
Simple Fall Front Yard
My vintage urns still have the plants from summer and the potato vines in my window boxes are trailing. I love how romantic they feel.
Our front door and shutters are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Buxton Blue in high gloss. I love how happy this color is and and looks perfect in every season.
This year I’m drawn to pinks and reds in my decor. I made the wreath over the weekend. I’ll share more about it with you guys soon, but it really is amazing what some hot glue and faux branches can do.
I’ve had that little wicker pumpkin for about 5 years. It came from Balsam Hill. We get our milk delivered weekly from Hornstra Farms so love having this on our front steps.
The flowers on our seven sons tree have just passed and now they’re turning pink. The bark is beginning to peel. I really love how this tree has something to look forward to in every season.
There’s a quote I love about fall:
“Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.”
Unknown
It’s so true. I see so much beauty right now in our yard and when we go for walks by the sea and in the woods.
Let’s head to the back yard for some more ideas.
Fall in the Garden
Talk about letting go – we’ve pulled out all our veggies and now enjoying the flowers that remain in our backyard.
These zinnias have brought so much happiness from Summer and now into Fall.
Only marigolds remain in our raised beds but are so cheerful just the same.
Fall on the Back Deck
I aged this compass rose with paint to make it look like aged copper. Get the tutorial here. I simply cut some ornamental grasses for the table.
An ironstone bowl I borrowed from the dining room filled with white pumpkins:
I took these photos on Sunday as Luke was lighting the fire pit and was overcome with the beautiful golden light.
I’m not sure if you can see but we have string lights hung here in the wisteria and I love our weathered shingles and weathered table Luke built. Click here for the plans. Next year we hope to redo the deck.
Simple Fall Lounging Area
Take your hammock and make it cozy!
I layered our LL Bean Hammock with a white duvet and pillows from Ikea. Adding a duvet makes it feel sooooo cozy!
My blog is actually named after this 1925 poetry book. You need a silver penny to get into fairyland 😉
Fall Pool House
The only thing I added to our pool house was the sweet little wreath on the door.
I’m not sure if you can tell by this post but we LOVE spending time in our yard whether it is just the two of us, or time with our kids, or having family and friends over. This is where we rest, relax, play and entertain. Fall is no different.
We have a separate area from the pool with a fire pit Luke bought me for my birthday a few years ago. It was the perfect gift! I shared more about it here.
I think I need to write another post on it and how to make homemade fire starters.
It’s smokeless, and while it’s an expensive investment, it’s so worth it!
Wine and a spread of cheese makes things even cozier, don’t you think?
This tray can be used to carry wine or can hold lots of different delicious treats!
I brought this out just for us, but it felt special. Sipping wine by the fire, reading, and catching up on emails.
Our trees are just starting to change color.

Hi Danielle, I love fall. It is such a good start to slowing down for a long winters nap!!! I too, like to get the last most bits of time out of the outdoor spaces before the C*O*L*D and snow. With your home being shingled, that is a good deal you never have to have it painted. Also, this is the first time I realized…do you not have a garage? A car port or a detached garage? How do you deal with the heavy New England snows and getting your cars going? My former vintage 1905 home had a detached… Read more »
100% agree with you about fall. I love the warmth of early fall here. You’re right! We don’t have a garage or carport. We have a circular driveway in the front yard and two sheds in our backyard to store things. I wish we had a garage (especially in winter). xx
Beautiful! I love that cozy looking fire bowl area! I have a feeling all those beautiful trees around you will be quite a fall show, as well! Thanks for being part of this series, Danielle:)
We love relaxing out here, Krista! Thank you for organizing the hop – I had so much fun taking part xx
So gorgeous Danielle! I love the hammock and cozy duvet and your fire pit area looks perfect for fall!
Thanks, Jenn. Lazing on the hammock with a good book or sitting by the fire with a glass of vino is my favorite.
