Cozy Living: 8 Ideas for Keeping Your Home Cozy This Winter
Winter is a great time to foster cozy living. Read on for 8 ideas for keeping your home cozy this winter.
The magic of Christmas and the sparkle of New Year’s Eve are over. The Christmas decorations are coming down this weekend. It’s a new year and time for a fresh start. I thought it would be fun as my first Cozy Living post on 2019 to share 8 ideas to make your home feel warm, inviting, and a retreat from the cold.
Often times we think we NEED more STUFF to create this but I think you’ll probably find many elements area already in your home. My friend Jennifer hosts this wonderful blog hop each month and all my friends have fun cozy living ideas at the bottom of this post.

The winter can feel dark.
Bleak.
Cold.
I know this. However, it is also a great time to foster a haven inside your home.
8 Ideas for Keeping Your Home Cozy this Winter
Add Plants
For Mother’s Day my kids gave me this Philodendron and I LOVE it. The woven basket was from Amazon. This plant is thriving in our living room. It just loves it so much in here. I love the leaves and the brilliant punch of green. I also really love the belly basket. The woven texture adds a relaxed feeling to our space.
It just adds so much life to the room. Something that is needed since all the Christmas greenery is down. Pops of green in winter (well, all year round) make my heart happy. Most of my plants have come from the Home Depot or from the grocery store. I just pick them up when I see them. I’ve actually written a few posts on caring for plants here and here.
Candles
I LOVE candles. The first thing I do in the morning before making coffee is light a candle on the counter. I love having them next to me while I read or write. I find the flicker of the flame and the fragrance so restful. We actually made our own candles last month with winter, woodsy scents and also lavender. They made great gifts but we’re also enjoying them in our home. I was so surprised how easy they were to make and also how much fun we had doing it. You can see how we made them here. I also really love from these candles Target. My favorite scents from their line are Sugared Birch, Fir & Leather, and Orange Amber.
Go Dark on Your Walls
Dark, moody walls can instantly make a room feel cozier. These walls are painted with Benjamin Moore’s Century Paint in Seraphinite. You can see the whole range in this post and the full room reveal here. When you walk into my husband’s office it feels like these velvety walls are giving you a hug!
A Roaring Fire
We added the gas fireplace last winter and it was the BEST decision we made. It has brought so many cozy moments here. From sitting fireside and reading, to playing cards and board games with the kids. I LOVE sitting here. Nothing chases away the winter blues than a crackling fire. You can see the makeover here.
Birch Logs
Birch logs add a wonderful wintery texture to any home whether you’re by the sea or in the mountains. We made these birch candle holders which are so pretty. I also love piling up birch logs in vessels and baskets in our entry or by the fireplace.
Baking Together
A snow day?!? Perfect opportunity to pull the mixer and chocolate chips out. Is there a better aroma than just baked brownies (they always remind me of baking with my dad) or fresh out of the oven chocolate chip cookies?
The above recipe is for our peanut butter chocolate chip cookies.
You can see more recipes we love here, but these snowball cookies were a big hit in our home and for friends over the holidays.
Faux Fur Thows
My husband might tell you that we have too many throws. We have faux fur and cashmere. I always am cold and love snuggling up with our kids, so I will always say you can’t have enough. This one is from World Market, but I also love these from Pottery Barn and from Target.
Early Bed Times and Linen Sheets
This linen bedding from Ikea is so cozy. I added these flannel sheets (they’re currently on sale) over the break, too, which makes our bed even cozier. Our bedroom is our sanctuary and love escaping here to read magazines or books in bed. I’m trying to be healthier this year which means earlier bedtimes.
What are your favorite ways to make your home cozy for the winter months? Would love to hear! I also would love any recommendation for the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker and books your loving!

I agree with you about house plants, they make a huge difference in a home. I am in the process of making winter pillow covers, makes everything cozy. Of course I love to read, just started the book, The Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. Also love drinking tea!
I actually want to add more house plants. I LOVE them so much. ooooh, I will check out that book. I love sipping tea and reading by the fire. In fact, I’m sipping tea by the fire as I type this. xx
Such beautiful ideas! They almost make me want it to stay winter. Almost.
“Almost” is the correct word. I’ll be happy when summer arrives and I’m hoping we have a spring here in New England this year. We haven’t had one for a few years as winter seems to last longer and longer…
I agree. reading, cozy fire, and candles are wonderful in winter. I have a few ferns in my house now that make me feel happy.
Oooooh, maybe i’ll get a few ferns. What type of ferns do you have right now. I can’t seem to keep Boston ferns alive in our house. I tried to bring our outdoor ones in and they weren’t too happy…
Rabbits foot fern and Lemon Button fern, they are for indoors but i put them on my Screened-in porch in the summer, they are easy to grow and take care of.
Those all sound lovely! Just bought a fern for our living room xx
Absolutely gorgeous ideas and photos! I’m headed to Ikea tomorrow, I’ll have to look for those sheets, that looks like heaven to me!
Oooooh, how was IKEA? Wish I could have gone shopping with you. I love wandering around there. xx
Your home keeps getting better and better! I’m becoming a big fan of dark walls. Although I don’t have any in my own home, I do love them. All of your ideas are great – I want to curl up in the bed with the flannel sheets!
I just saw you’re adding dark walls in your home! I can’t wait to see how they come out. xx
it seems as though we have the same ideas to stay warm and cozy this winter! that wall color is gorgeous!
Yes, we do. Loved reading your post.
I wrote a post about my cozy home yesterday, and about my instant pot review/recipes the day before – we must be kindred spirits!! This is my first visit, I’m excited to hop around and check out your lovely cozy home!
You know, I thought that instant pot was just a gimmick. Another gadget. When my husband bought it for our family for christmas, I rolled my eyes, but I love it! We’ve made baked eggs for healthy breakfast, delicious salmon and broccoli and we love the butter chicken and rice! xx
