Decorating with Blue
I’m a blue lover but it’s also been named as Pantone’s color of the year for 2020. Here are my tips for decorating with blue.
Instilling calm, confidence, and connection, this enduring blue hue highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.

I took a color theory class at Boston Architectural College last year and learned that blue is the most popular of colors. It’s often used by hospitals and corporations because it’s seen as a “trustworthy” color. Blue is considered a calming color and is said to encourage productivity and creative problem solving.
Living by the sea, I’m drawn to this color and enjoy using it in our home. You’ll see it in rugs, on walls, on furniture, and decorative accents. Would you like to incorporate blue into your home? Here are some ways.
Decorating with Blue
Blue in Original Art
This painting by my friend, Becky, hangs in our dining room and each time I look at it I feel peace and serenity. It looks perfect in here.
I created sun prints with our boys a few years ago. Amazon actually sells a kit that’s so much fun to work with. I had these prints hanging in our front hall for a few years. Since then I’ve turned them into note card sets and original art which are available in our online shop.
Moody Walls
This moody blue wall color, read more about it here, makes my husband’s office so warm and cozy. Hopefully, more productive, too 😉
Tribal Accents
This one of a kind lamp from Guatemala makes a statement in our living room.
Blue on the Floor
In writing this post, I’m realizing many of our rugs have this exact shade of blue in them. The rug above is in our dining room and we absolutely love it!
We added this plush shag rug to the boys’ room last year but I still have to finish updating their space. This rug is so soft!!!
Bathroom Vanity
We wanted to give our bathroom a little update. This new paint – Oxford Navy – makes such a statement, especially with new hardware. I added a few more blue decorative elements to the space, too, including this shower curtain and some vintage finds.
Plush Pillows
These indoor outdoor pillows give a classic needle point look to our classic adirondacks.
Pillows are a wonderful way to add accents of blue through out your home.
I’m a big fan of my friend, Jen’s pillow collection.
I also love plush velvet pillows, like these.
Paint it Blue
As you guys know, I love painting furniture. This was a very popular piece I did a few years back. It’s one of my favorites.
Here’s a few others:
Vintage Blue Accents
I love blue and white plates and found these grill plates from the 1950s in Falmouth. They’re reproduction willow pattern. We use them so much.
I love crocks and vintage Chinese pottery. You can find these quite easily at Antique Shows and yard sales.
I hope this post gave you some ideas for incorporating blue into your home this year! Let me know if you have any questions about sources 😉
Love your “Blues”! I’m a collector too. Through out my home.
Thank you! Blue lovers unite 😉
