DIY: Burlap Pin Board

After: My new burlap pin board!

I’ve been wanting a burlap pin board for quite some time.  I just love that rough / relaxed texture of burlap and thought it would be fun next to my heavy desk.  I got a great frame on Freecycle that had not such a great oil painting inside:

(before)

I don’t know if you can see the detail but it is bamboo and there is a lot of gold.  You all know I’m not a GOLD person, but I loved the gold leaf on the linen mat and the bamboo.  So I got my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint out to rehab the frame:

I used a Nantucket Blue (Greek Blue mixed with Old White) and wiped it with a wet rag.  Then after it was dry.  I dry brushed Old White.  It just needed something soft over the blue and gold.
Then I asked my lovely hubby to help with the pin board part. If you want to make your own here’s what you’ll need:
– A frame of your choice
– Plywood
– Cork (we got cork squares from Staples)
– Burlap (I got mine for $4 a yard at Jo-Ann’s), still have loads left for other projects
– Wood Glue
– Saw
– Staple Gun
1. Cut down plywood to the size you need for you frame:
2. Take the cork squares and cut them to fit the plywood:
3. Using wood glue affix the cork to the plywood backing.  We left a small gap around the edge so the pin board wasn’t too snug for the frame:
4. Then we cut the burlap a little larger than the plywood and attached with a staple gun:
5. We inserted the completed pin board into the frame and used the staple gun to hold it into the frame.
A really affordable and easy way to make your own burlap pin board.  I think mine ended up costing $10 compared to $89 and up at other stores like Wisteria, Ballard Designs and Pottery Barn.
Here’s how it looks in my little office area where I blog to all of you:

PS You may notice the ‘new’ desk chair.  My mom found it for $6. Can you believe that price?  She’s quite the bargain shopper!  It is a very heavy Paines Furniture chair and I love it. Super comfy.  It has a great patina from someone’s hands resting on the arms and a worn seat.  Now my question for you is do I leave it as it is and fix the minor piece of wood that is missing or do I pull out my paint brush and chalk paint?  Right now I’m leaning to keeping it wood.  What do you think?
