DIY Curtain Rod

I’m bursting with excitement this morning to share with you a little DIY Curtain Rod we created for John’s room.

You may remember that the last time I shared images of the boys’ rooms we were painting the walls in Farrow and Ball Pale Powder.  They boys room is adjoining and when we moved in this is how the area was looking:

So sorry about the poor lighting in the before.  It was taken the night before we moved in.  I think you can see how excited they were for these lovely bedrooms with a secret doorway.  They love chatting to each other when falling asleep.

Anyway, back to the curtains.  As you know, the theme for their room in our seaside home is nautical.  I wanted the curtain to be light and airy but still masculine.  I thought about using an oar for the rod.  That was until I found this amazing antique boat hook at Bent Nail Farm Antiques in Marshfield.

Boat hooks are used on boats to retrieve items from the water; for example, pulling the line in for the mooring. Saying I’m in LOVE with this boat hook would be an understatement.  Look at this aged patina:

See what I mean?  That delicate rope, the aged wood, the corroding metal…..  Anyway, I knew this was the rod I was looking for.

If you’d like to create this look in your own home, he’s what you’ll need:

DIY Nautical Curtain Rod

– Curtains (our’s were from Target their Threshold Line)
– An oar, boat hook or metal rod the desired width
– Brackets (we got our’s at Lowe’s)
– Tie Backs (optional)

Step 1  – Measure your opening.  This is so important.  You don’t want to buy an oar and find you needed the really long ones.

Step 2 – Offer up your upcycled rod and decide where the brackets need to go.  Attach this securely to the wall.

Step 3 – Put curtain on rod

Step 4 – Place rod with curtain in place

Step 5 – Attach tie backs (if using).  I decided not to use tie backs for these curtains.

John and Conor love their new curtain and curtain rod.  Next up we’ll be hanging pictures and mirrors and creating some fun pieces with driftwood.
