DIY Fern Wreath
Add elegance and a summery feel to any space with ferns. My DIY fern wreath is a great way to use this leafy plant and is such a quick craft.
This is the second week of the Seasonal Simplicity Tour hosted by my friend Krista over at The Happy Housie. This week is all about wreaths. I’m currently OBSESSED with ferns so wanted to incorporate them into my DIY wreath. Last week I shared how to make sunprints and rustic frames (in case you missed it).
See? Obsessed with ferns. In fact, I have feeling you guys might being seeing a few more fern projects for the summer. I bought a few fern plants from the Scituate Garden Club Plant Sale last weekend just in case 😉 I just love how ferns are so soft, calming and elegant all at the same time. I used real ferns for the sunprints that were growing wild in our yard, but for this wreath project I decided to use faux ferns, that way it could be used outside and can be stored in our basement after summer is over.
This is a quick and easy craft. They’re the best kind, don’t you think?

DIY Fern Wreath
Materials
- Wispy Grape Vine Wreath
- Faux Ferns, plant or single fern stems
- Hot Glue Gun
- Hot Glue
- Wire
- Twine
I had an old faux fern plant in the basement so I used that rather than buying loose fern fronds. The key is to get ferns that have wire inside that you can bend and shape.
Method
Step 1 – Cut ferns off of plant. It’s good to have a variety of sizes. You might also need some scissors to cut through the material.
Step 2 – Play with the ferns and see how you’d like to place them on your wreath. I really love the natural element of the grapevine so I decided to only cover part of my wreath with ferns, but you could cover the whole thing. Shape your ferns and bend them in different directions. I think this makes it look more natural.
Step 3 – To secure ferns to your wreath use both green gardening twine and hot glue. I started with the top fern which starts in the back and comes forward around the top. Put a bead of hot glue to secure ferns and make sure to press on the fern to make sure the glue sets. The great thing about the grapevine wreaths is they have lots of areas you can tuck the ends of the ferns into.
Step 4 – Continue filling ferns along the side of the wreath. I used smaller ferns to cover the areas where green twine was showing.
Special Tip – Before finishing the wreath. Hold it up in front of you or prop it against a wall as it will give you a different vantage point. Sometimes it can look good while down on the table but you might have to add a few more fronds to fill it out.
Step 5 – Once the glue is dry. Tie some jute twine onto the top of the wreath and hang.
The whole project probably took me 15 minutes.
I currently have the wreath hanging in our dining room and I love how pretty it is with all the greenery and white walls.
But I also thought it could be cute outside, so I hung it over on the She Shed.
You can’t see in these photos but this area is a bit of a construction zone right now.
We’re putting in a pool which is almost done (eeek!). I cropped these photos so you can’t really tell the yard is dug up and the pool is half finished….
It looks so simple and summery outside.
So I’ll have to figure out when the time comes if I should put it outside with the pool or keep it in the dining room. Where do you guys like it best?
If you enjoyed this project, be sure to pin it for later.

I love how fresh and green it is, perfect for summertime! And how lucky, the pool will be so much fun! xo
You must have access to a better source for grapevine wreaths than the standard craft store chains. This is a really pretty one. I’m liking ferns this season too and have incorporated some of the faux variety into my apartment balcony decor.
So simple, but adds the perfect pop of greenery! I picked up a fern for the first time ever for our side porch this year! XO
So pretty Danielle! I love your asymmetrical design. 🙂
My goodness those faux fern fronds look so real! Ok I love how natural your wreath came out! It looks fabulous in your home as well as on your gorgeous blue door!
I love your love of ferns…it’s inspired me to add some ferns to my patio this summer! Your wreath is perfect!
I adore this wreath, I can’t decide where I like it better though, maybe it should go where you will see it the most, it’s so perfect! Yay for fern love!
Love the ferns!
I am so gaga over all your fern projects. I love ferns for summer – they give a feeling of sitting in a cool, shady spot on a hot summer day. So glad you could be part of this hop, Danielle!
