DIY Floating Starfish Wreath

Mermaid kisses & starfish wishes.”

As many of you know, we live in coastal New England. A little fishing town called Scituate and it certainly feels like summer has started early as we’ve all been at home. For years, I’ve dreamed about making a floating starfish wreath. I really, really love starfish (even though we can’t find them on our beaches). There’s something so beautiful and simple about them.
I thought this would be a perfect project to tackle this week as part of the Seasonal Simplicity Tour hosted by my good friend Krista, over at The Happy Housie. All my friends are sharing fabulous summer wreaths (direct links at the bottom of the post).
What’s wonderful about this is you only need three essential elements so it’s really, really simple!

DIY Floating Starfish Wreath
What You’ll Need
- Wire Wreath Form (I reused one from the Dollar Tree – I had made moss wreath last spring)
- Starfish (I used a mix of these and these) – 50 in total
- Hot Glue and Hot Glue Gun
- Wax Paper (to protect surface)
Method
Step 1 – Roughly lay out starfish to get a feel for how you want to position them on the wreath form.
Step 2 – Heat up glue gun and glue starfish to wreath. It helps to lift the form up on a basket to be able to glue starfish on the edges.
Step 3 – Work in sections, building up starfish. I lined the back of each one with hot glue and added more glue where necessary once in place. Be careful, I kept burning my finger tips.
Step 4 – Think of this a maximalist wreath. The more starfish you layer, the better the wreath will look!
Step 5 – Allow to dry and remove any of the glue strands. You can add a ribbon at this point but I decided to hang mine without. I think it goes better on the Pool House with no ribbon – super simple.
Here you can get a feel how it looks in our yard – we’ve been enjoying books in the hammock, watching Conor swim in the pool (it’s far too cold for me to venture in just yet) and enjoying meals and coffee outside.
Luke still needs to put our little whale weathervane up as we took it down for the winter.
Hope you like how the floating starfish wreath came out and look forward to seeing your versions!
Poppy and I are were so excited to share it with you.

This is soooo cute!! I love how it looks on your turquoise door! I just might have to make one!
I love this! This is a perfect New England summer wreath!
Ok this is the cutest summer wreath ever! I love the simplicity and beauty! Pinned!
This is so cute, Danielle! I love it -the overlapping starfish are so pretty!
I have one of these wreaths from the coast. The only difference I would recommend is to paint the wire frame white.
We’re in coastal southeastern North Carolina in a beach community. Can’t find starfish on our beach either but I’m going to purchase a few bags and make this for my door too!
By the way, would you mind sharing the color of the pool house door? Love that blue!
Wow, your wreath turned out great and it looks perfect on your pool house door! Pinned.
It’s so so beautiful! Love the coastal vibes!
Your floating starfish wreath is the perfect summer accent for your beautiful she shed Danielle. I love it!!
Thank you for sharing your DIY project at Create, Bake, Grow & Gather this week. I’m delighted to be featuring your floating starfish wreath at tomorrow’s party and pinning too.
Hugs,
Kerryanne
I love how unique this wreath is Danielle! The wreath looks great on your door as well!
Danielle, your wreath is gorgeous! And it looks perfect on your pretty blue door! A similar DIY just might be in My Wee Abode’s future! 😉 We’d love for you to share over at Tuesday Turn About!
love it but i probably would paint the wire wreath a white or off white so it doesn’t show through
This is lovely and I’ll make one for our new beach cottage. Great idea! Any chance you’d share the lovely name/brand of the aqua paint color on the door and shutters?
Hi Marie, I hope you make one for your beach cottage. The door and shutter is color matched to match our home’s door and shutters which is Buxton Blue in high gloss. It’s a Benjamin Moore color.
I made this wreath for friends in Florida and it looks wonderful. I sealed it with a matte spray. Unfortunately after 2 days, lots of the starfish fell off. Any suggestions? Wire? String?
Hmmm, I’m so sorry that happened. I’m wondering if it’s the humidity down in Florida. I’m not sure.
Do you have any suggestions?
Hi Kristen, Here are some things that you could maybe do – drill a whole through the center of the starfish and use fishing wire to secure it to the wreath or you could use gorilla glue instead of hot glue which might have a better bond. Another thing to try is maybe a wooden wreath sprayed white and affixing it with gorilla glue. I’m wondering if the metal is getting hot and then the humidity is allowing the starfish to fall off. Hope that helps! Danielle xx
Heat prob melting the hot glue. Would E6000 work better?
The wreath is beautiful! I would love to know the colors you painted your shed?
Thank you, Cheryl. The doors and shutters are Buxton Blue by Benjamin Moore the gray is actually siding but very similar to: gray owl or stonington gray. Hope that helps!
Hi Danielle,
Getting ready to make a few of these beautiful starfish wreaths for Mother’s Day gifts.Thank you for sharing this project! Wondering if anyone has dyed the starfish? Thinking the wreath would look lovely with grey/silver starfish on a white door? Probably would also paint the wire frame. Thank you!
What is the paint color on this door
We color matched this to our home’s front door and shutter color which is Buxton Blue by Benjamin Moore. xx
