DIY Moss Heart
A quick and easy way to show someone you love them – a DIY moss heart!
We don’t go overboard on Valentine’s just something to show how much we love each other. I do something for the kids and for Luke. Some years we’ve done crafts – heart crayons or watercolor hearts.
This year I made a little moss heart for him and thought it would be a lovely gift to share with your loved one. The wood has a special story, too.
In my home decor, I’m always inspired by the natural world. This winter I’m obsessed with moss. You may remember I shared that DIY Moss Wreath and the moss napkin rings in the Cozy Living Series. Click here if you missed it.
Well, that stick on moss got me thinking…
Wouldn’t it be so pretty to cut out a moss heart and stick it to some live-edge wood?
My husband loves woodworking, as you know, and we have some beautiful black walnut downstairs drying. Sadly, the black walnut tree in our yard had to come down to make room for the pool. We had the wood milled and it’s dry enough to use! I thought this would be such a special way to share part of our yard and our home. The love we have for the land our home is on and for each other.
This piece of wood is of the outer most layer and has the bark on the other side.
Isn’t it beautiful?
Luke plans on building furniture with the rest of the wood. I can’t wait to see what he comes up with but I have a few ideas 😉
So here’s my easy DIY for a moss heart:

What You’ll Need
- Heart Template (or draw your own)
- Stick On Moss
- Scissors
- Wood (to mount it to)
Method
Turn the moss over and trace your heart. I used one of the little watercolor hearts we made last year, but I made it slightly larger.
Carefully, cut your moss heart out.
Peel the backing off and adhere to the wood.
I used the reclaimed wood but you could use a pine board from Home Depot and use a stain to give an antique wood affect. You can see that same look here and here.
I gave Luke the moss heart early and have it up on our mantel.
A little hint of Valentine’s Day in our decor but it isn’t going overboard and fits with our neutral, nature-loving decor.
There’s still time to make this for your Valentine! Do you think you’ll give it a try?
I don’t decorate much for Valentine’s day either. I have dried rosebuds around because I am slowly adding some romance in my decor.
That piece of the black walnut tree is pretty.

Oooh, your dried rose buds sound so perfect! Isn’t black walnut a beautiful wood?
