DIY Project: Driftwood Sign

For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted a sign to commemorate my favorite beach. In Scituate we are spoiled for many great beaches. There is Minot, Egypt, Pegotty, Museum and the little beach next to Scituate Light. Each beach has its own personality – Egypt is rocky, Peggoty is nice and sandy and Museum Beach is where we had our family photos done and it is a great beach for collecting small pieces of sea glass.
Our favorite beach is Minot. It is up the street from our house and has amazing tide pools where my boys and all their friends love to find hermit crabs and snails. Minot Ledge Light sits majestically out in the ocean amongst the crashing waves and Well Rock is there for whoever wants to climb it (usually John & Conor and the rest of the kids on the beach).
So Conor and I were lucky enough to find this really great piece of driftwood in August. Here is my angel frolicking with another piece of driftwood:
For the past several months, I’ve been looking at this driftwood trying to decide what to do with it and it hit me on Black Friday – I’m going to make a sign!
Here is what I did:
I looked at the length of the driftwood and decided on the size I wanted the letters. I then typed MINOT in arial font bold on the computer, size 200.
I lined it up on the sign and then I traced the letters by pressing really hard so an indent would form on the wood. A trick I learned on Pinterest.
I traced the indentations lightly in pencil and then I took my Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White and painted the letters:
Martha Stewart has some wonderful stencils at Michael’s and I decided on the scallop one for my sign. I loved the starfish, but I didn’t have enough room.
I didn’t put wax on the chalk paint as I wanted that old fashioned, weathered look. To hang the sign I added some jute twine and some eyes to make it more beachy. Voila! Here is the sign I made essentially for free – a gift from the sea with materials I already had around the house! It is a great addition to our home.

So pretty. I love driftwood crafts. I always see these type of crafts or signs in fancy home stores and think it would be so much more fun and more cost effective to do myself. You have that down!
