DIY Snowy Galvanized Star Ornaments

I’m so excited to share how to make these sweet ornaments with you!

My friend Krista has organized an amazing group of bloggers sharing 22 DIY ornaments in all!

A sweet Christmas tree with pretty galvanized star ornaments

These sweet galvanized stars actually came from some outdoor lights we had. They’d been outside for years which added to the patina. Some are a bit rusty. The thing was the stars kept falling off but I kept thinking I might come up with a plan for them. They’ve been in the basement waiting for a refresh and at last these stars are reappearing as fun Christmas ornaments this  year 😉

The string lights we had were similar to this, but you could also use these stars for this project too.

I actually played around with sparkle and faux snow to get the right affect. Here’s a few examples of faux snow.

Ways to create faux snow

Top Left – Epsom Salt, Bottom Left – Epsom Salt / German Glitter Glass, Top Right Faux Plastic Snow from Michaels, Bottom Right Faux Plastic Snow with Epsom Salt. I decided to go with the bottom left version.

I wasn’t sure if the Epsom Salt would dissolve with the mod podge so I tested it out first and it was fine.

I started by dabbing glue and mod podge with a brush haphazardly around the star (think about where snow might settle if it were to snow on your stars).

Sprinkle Epsom Salt and German Glitter Glass on top. I used a mix of coarse and fine glitter glass.

Allow them to dry completely and then hang them on your tree.

What you need for making snowy galvanized star ornaments

Since we don’t have a tree up yet. I hung them on this sweet little tree in the kids’ room.

The tree and the fur throw are both from Ikea.

I added my favorite battery lights from Amazon.

Store the ornaments wrapped in plastic because the German Glitter Glass can tarnish when exposed to air for extended periods.
