Dusk on the Deck
There’s something magical about dusk on the deck. In today’s post I’m sharing tips on getting a laid back coastal style at home.
To me summers in our Scituate home are magical.
That cool ocean breeze, the salty air, perhaps the feeling of sand still stuck between your toes.
I love eating on the beach or down at the boat club. We enjoy family meals out in the harbor BUT my favorite spot is right here on our back deck.
Last week I shared our full summer home tour, click here.
This week we’re talking about outdoor spaces and decks in the Seasonal Simplicity Home Tour hosted by my friend Krista.
Well, I thought our deck at dusk would be perfect to share with you.
Our deck is by no means perfect. It’s old pressure treated wood that is splittery, hence the outdoor rug.
One day I’d love to do this space over but for now I’ll use what I have and enjoy it.
The wisteria flowers have died back but the greenery makes a lovely natural barrier. It feels so secluded out here.
We added these string lights from Target last year and I love how they have an old fashioned look. They really give such a nice warm glow at night.
Luke built the table and bench a few years ago, you can read that tutorial here and here.
It’s cedar and has a weathered patina.
I love the silvery gray color it has turned. Part of me was thinking about pressure washing it or sanding but I also really like this relaxed style. The other chairs are from Target and have stood up so well over the years (we bring them in during the winter).
You may notice that we’ve planted more herbs out here. We have parsley, savory, two kinds of mint and basil (but the basil isn’t doing so good). The sedum is thriving, as are the chives. I love having herbs out here for cooking and cocktails.
The table is decorated very simply with items we already had.
I placed the olive plants and candles into metal lanterns I got a few years ago from Balsam Hill.
Flickering candles look so romantic out here.
Our boys love collecting beach rocks. We always end up bringing more home each time we go to the beach.
These rocks have such beautiful colors in them and are so smooth from being thrown in the surf.
Stacked rocks always feel so peaceful to me.
I love adding pops of green into our decor. I love using plants but I think this preserved greenery adds the perfect pop of green to our tablescape. I ordered them a few years back from Save On Crafts and I honestly can’t remember what the correct name is for them:
Dusk on the deck wouldn’t be complete without some rose.
This is my favorite kind. It’s so crisp and light and refreshing.
Oh, and it has the most beautiful glass stopper.
I’m actually saving the bottles as we drink them because I think they would be so pretty with branches or candles in them.
There’s nothing like staying home for real comfort.
I’m hoping a glimpse at dusk on our deck gave you a few ideas for summer.
Using simple things like candles, rocks, and string lights can make a space feel so inviting.

Beautiful, Danielle! The perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing summer evening. I can smell the sea air! So glad you could join in on this hop, friend!!
Loved your tour. Carefree and as relaxing oasis you created. The colors of the stones stacked are beautiful. Enjoy

I, too, save those rose bottles with the glass stoppers. I keep my oils and vinegars in them.
Your deck looks so peaceful. I imagine it is a great deal cooler there than here, where it was 100 yesterday. Even early mornings and late evenings are sometimes too steamy!
I love it! Those rocks and all the greenery & candles. It is perfect!
Wow! I can see why you love spending time here. It’s truly magical with those lights and the greenery.
Love your cozy deck.
What a cozy little area! LOVE all the trees!
Danielle! This is so enchanting and magical! I love it and can’t wait for my yard to mature and grow and feel more like this. Thanks for sharing! XOXO
Oh I can see why you love it out here so much…it is SO magical. I don’t think there’s anything I love more than a deck space at dusk with twinkly lights. Your space is so so lovely.
What an enchanting space, and I love how all the greenery keeps it private! XO
Such a pretty deck, the table has weathered to such a lovely shade of gray and the pillows and throw make it so cozy. I love the Edison lights too. And I am now looking for those lovely bottles of wine just for the stoppers,(maybe).😀
