Easy Ideas with Spring Flowers
Spring flowers make me so happy and I’m so happy it’s getting warm enough to start planting outside here in New England. I’m excited to share some easy ideas with spring flowers.
I spent ALL day outside planting on Sunday and it felt wonderful! I’m sharing some fun ideas with you from: adding window boxes to a simple wreath alternative for your front door.
I know everywhere is different and I try to make sure to wait until the frost or threat of snow has passed. It can always be a guessing game here in Scituate. We’ve had snow April 1st. I know. What a cruel April Fools’ joke!
It’s wonderful to think about using a variety of spring blooms and now that the forsythia is in bloom it really feels like spring in our yard.
How to create pretty window boxes using spring flowers
It’s important to make sure you start with a good foundation. Learn to make these coastal inspired window boxes with watering system. My husband made them for me a few years ago and they’ve really stood up. I love how big they are. I now have plenty of room for flower planting!
Prepare your soil
You want to use good soil for planting and I like to add plant food to the soil when planting.
Think of color and shape
I love adding height with the Muscari (as pictured above) and I’ve also used spikes for height. I also like to use vines to spill down from the window boxes, but it’s still a bit too cold here for that. I love using potato vines. I will add them in the next few weeks.
I’ve added an assorted mix of the apple cider pansies. I love the warmth they add to our window boxes. I recommend getting trays for pansies if you have long window boxes like we do!
Using Your Hands
I have a good shovel but when planting small plants it’s best to get your hands dirty in the soil. I find I can work better that way.
Some Favorite Spring Flowers to Consider
- Pussy willows
- Pansies and Violas
- Blue Muscari (also known as grape hyacinth)
- Daffodils
- Tulips
I’m partial to pansies / violas because they last the longest. They will thrive into summer and then I will replace the flowers with summer blooms.
How to Create a Spring Flower Basket
A fun alternative to a spring wreath is a flower basket. I found this affordable seagrass basket at a consignment shop for $15 and couldn’t help but think how great it would look with flowers. You can change it up for different seasons too!
The woven texture adds so much warmth to our pool house door. Adding texture is a secret design tip that always makes homes feel warm inside and out!
Why You’ll Love Creating a Spring Flower Basket
- It’s affordable
- It’s quick and easy – no hot glue mess either!
- This craft can be updated and repurposed for each season swapping out the flowers.
What You’ll Need to Create a Basket Filled with Spring Flowers
- A basket
- A container for inside or a balled up wire. I try not to use floral foam because it’s bad for the environment
- Realistic Looking Faux Flowers
- Real Pussy Willows to add height
This basket only took me a few minutes to put together.
I would recommend only hanging it where it will be protected from the elements, unless you find a basket that’s durable for outdoors. I’m showing it on our shed for decorative purposes only. I now have it inside our sunroom just incase we get lots of April showers.

I love your flower basket. It looks so cute on your shed!
Aw, thank you! It was fun to put together. I’m so happy spring weather has arrived!
Hi there would you share the paint color on your shutters and doors of the pool house please? I live by the water on the east coat PEI Canada and there are so many shades to pick from it’s hard to tell from a paint swatch but looking at your color that’s what I want lol… thank you
Hi Linda, the shed gray is actually gray siding, but the colors are close to Wickham Gray or Stonington Gray. The door and shutters is Buxton Blue. Can’t wait to see how your painting comes out!
