Easy to Care for House Plants
In February (every year) I find myself craving green plants. I thought you might be feeling the same way. Today I’m sharing Easy to Care for House Plants.
In no particular order a few “easy to care for” house plants.
Dragon Fingers Snake Plant
This is actually the newest plant in my collection. I picked it up last week as I was craving some fresh greenery. Isn’t it so sweet?!? It is related to the Snake Plant. It likes bright to low light and has low water needs. This is a win win for me as our living room is north-facing – so not very bright and I always forget to water my plants.
This type of plant is highly toxic to pets if ingested so be careful if you have fur babies. Our dogs are good and don’t eat plants.
I’ll share more about the vignette above next week. It’s my little dose of spring in the dead of winter 😉
Swiss Cheese Philodendron
We added this beauty in the fall. I included it as part of our Traditional Front Hall Makeover and love the dose of greenery as we enter the front door. This is a type of philodendron and I absolutely love the holes.
I found this beauty at Winston Flowers and I also bought the gorgeous pot there as well. The pot is handmade in Japan and the technique is Raku.
Swiss Cheese Philodendron needs warm interior temperatures of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit or warmer. This plant also needs moderately moist soil and high humidity. I was warned not to overwater it though. I water it once a week to 10 days.
Air Plant
These plants are so easy to look after. They like bright, filtered light and should never be planted in soil. I love sticking them in shells or placing them in baskets or on books. They’re also fun to glue onto rocks or driftwood.
I have a teeny tiny one in the bathroom:
I soak it in water when it’s look dry. You can also spritz with water.
Here’s another example on our mantel.
Snake Plant
This plant I forget about all time and its still going strong. I’ve had it for 3 years. You hardly need to do anything for this plant. So if you don’t have a green thumb this might be the plant for you!
It’s also known as Mother-in-law’s Tongue which I think is such a funny name.
Pothos
This is the easiest plant to look after, even if you maybe forget to water it. This trailing plant has beautiful heart shaped leaves which come in various colors. I found our pothos at the supermarket. I love how it trails. It is happy in low light or full sun.
Money Tree
The Money Tree gives a tropical feel with a braided stem. It’s native to Mexico and popular in Asia. I love that it gives our kitchen a tropical feel in winter.
The Money Tree gets its name because the Feng Shui practice believes it will bring positive energy and good luck to the owner. It also says the plant helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Succulents
Succulents are so easy to care for! I love making my own terrariums but love using them on tablscapes (as party favors). They also make a statement when placed together in a hanging wall or in a large shell.
Philodendron
My boys gave me this plant for Mother’s Day a few years ago. It has thrived in our home. It enjoys bright indirect light and should not be overwatered. It adapts to one’s home climate. This site has great growing tips.
Benefits of House Plants
House plants make a space feel inviting and warm. Many reduce stress and anxiety. It’s also said that some are natural air purifiers. I feel like plants infuse our rooms with energy.
Favorite Sources
I’ve sourced our plants from all over. Here’s a list of places I’ve enjoyed buying plants from.
- Traders Joes – lovely selection of house plants and fresh flowers. The Money Tree was from there.
- Winston Flowers – has a lovely selection of harder to find plants, and gorgeous hand thrown pottery, which makes a statement in any home.
- Shaw’s – I know this is gonna sound crazy but I love buying plants at the super market. The pothos is from there and I also got a cute wavy fern.
- Plants & Ponytails – a local shop in Hanover which has a wonderful selection of house plants. They have a wealth of knowledge and steered me away from some plants which may not have been good for the dogs. They also will repot the plant for you in the store.
- Kennedy’s Country Gardens – another local spot on 3A. They have beautiful indoor and outdoor plants.
- Home Depot – I’ve had great luck at Home Depot for Snake Plants, air plants, and succulents. I actually wrote a post about the plants I love at Home Depot here.
- Local Plant Sales – every year we go to the Garden Club plant sale and love finding new things for our home – inside and out.
Well, I hope this gave you guys a few ideas for easy to care for house plants. Would love to add more to our collection, especially some bigger plants. Any you guys would recommend? Would love to hear!
The jars under the succulents. Love them. Where did you get them? really enjoyed this post. Thanks for letting us know that the first plant was toxic for animals. I am assuming that they others are fine then?
Hi Erin, I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. Those containers were actually from Ikea 😉 So I’m not sure about the other plants. If there was a certain plant you loved that I posted and you’re worried about your pet then I would do a search online to see if it would be okay for them. Our dogs don’t try and eat the plants so I haven’t done research into it. I did see this with 20 house plants safe for dogs and cats – https://www.thespruce.com/safe-houseplants-for-pets-4588752 Hope that helps! Danielle x
Thanks so much for responding back. I appreciate it.I will check out the site. I’m definitely heading over to IKEA next week. Thanks again
All of your plants look lovely in your home! I love the little mini-snake plant and the trailing pothos on your china cabinet.
