Emile Buffet (Before & After)

As I type this, we’re preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Sandy.  Us here in Situate are a pretty hardy crowd, but the town has cancelled school and has set up an evacuation center if the storm gets bad.  The rain is falling and the wind is howling.  Fingers crossed it doesn’t get too bad and we all stay safe.

I’m so excited to share with you my latest before and after.  My client bought this beautiful Henredon Buffet but wanted to freshen it up for a mountain retreat they just had built.

Emile Buffet (After)

Here’s the before:

Henredon Buffet (Before)
It was stunning before, but my client likes color and I feel like the detail and hardware really stand out now.
Her space has a lovely stone fireplace and tan walls and we used the linen curtain fabric as a jumping off point:
Linen Cutains
We pulled Annie Sloan Chalk Paint colors in Emile (a deep lilac) and Chateau Grey (a grey green used in French molding) directly from the curtains.
Emile and Chateau Grey (with clear wax)

After careful consideration we decided the colors needed to be toned down with some dark wax and the results are stunning.

Sample boards with dark wax
I know some of you are scared to use dark wax but I find mixing it with mineral spirits to liquify it really helps to apply.  I brush it on with my ultimate wax brush and then wipe away the excess.
Here’s an example of the door on the left just having clear wax and the door on the right with dark wax:
The dark wax almost changes the Emile from a deep lilac to a muted plum color.  The dark wax brought out the lovely carved details:

The hardware looks lovely against it:

and here:
I love the shape, it is kind of masculine and angular but the colors make it more feminine.
Emile Dresser (After)

The wax brought out a great patina on the top and buffing enhanced this with a nice sheen.

I dropped it off with my client over the weekend and she was so happy with the results.  I can’t wait to see how it looks in her great room.

Absolutely gorgeous – I wouldn’t have thought those colors could look so beautiful together ( but I do love both of them and have used them a lot )

Wow! The colors looks so great together and I love it with the dark wax. The hardware is so pretty-especially on the center drawer. I agree, the more masculine style of furniture really grounds the piece and the color makes it a beautiful yet soft focal point. Stunning!

Wow that turned out beautifully. I love the colors together. Awesome job! Stay safe in this storm. We live in Michigan near Lake Huron, but we are having fairly high winds today. The reach of this storm is incredible. Take care.

Love the colour combination with the dark wax over the top. A great feature piece to go with that pretty fabric.
We have been having loads of news about the weather over there, I hope it doesn’t get too crazy – stay safe xx

Danielle —- THAT is one gorgeous piece!!! You did an amazing job on it! I never would’ave thought that those two colors would look good together, but they do! And thanks so much for the tip on dark wax. I want to try mixing it next time with mineral spirits so that I’m not so frustrated when I use it. 🙂

What a wonderful custom look with the fabric and sideboard in the same colours! The dark was definitely takes it all up a notch. ~ Maureen

Oh my goodness this turned out so beautiful. You really did an awesome job. I sure pray that you and your family are safe. The reports and pictures of the places that have been affected are just really upsetting. I so feel for everyone that has been touched by this storm.

Hi Alicia! Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We are okay. It is so sad all the damage the storm did, especially in New Jersey and New York.
