Fresh and Clean Home Ideas
January is a great time to set home goals and give your home a fresh and clean look. Read on for fresh and clean home ideas!
It’s January. January 12th to be exact. What are your hopes and goals for this New Year? Currently we’re having an arctic blast so it’s too cold to go outside. Perfect time to take a look INSIDE the home and make some updates! Want some ideas to refresh your home for the new year – I have a bunch of fresh and clean ideas!
This year we hope to finish our bedroom makeover (I know, I’ve kept you waiting for a year – but I have started on the bedside table so the final reveal and a furniture makeover will be coming soon), finish our sunroom refresh, share updates to our home office, home gym, and hoping for an update to our deck and maybe starting the planning stages of a new kitchen.
2020 and 2021 were years when our homes had to function as sanctuary, school, workplace, and a place of comfort. While the kids are now back at school for in person learning, Luke and I still work full time from home. We actually share an office 😉 Here’s a peek for now:
Okay, are you ready for some fresh ideas to welcome this new year?
Fresh and Clean Home Ideas
Some of these may sound obvious…
1. Pare back your stuff!
I’ve been doing a lot of this lately. In fact, I brought 4 trash bags filled with clothes and unwanted home items to Savers this week. Getting rid of things that no longer serve you helps local charities but also frees up space in your home. I’m finding less is more!
For my Scituate friends, I’m also a member of Scituate Moms Share and I’m sure there are more of these sharing facebook groups, where moms post things they no longer want or need. Then moms come and pick them up from your front porch. It’s so easy.
Consigning clothing and furniture is another great way to free up space in your home.
2. Deep Clean
For some reason my home always feels better when we give it a good tidy up! I’ve enlisted my family to help. So we’re deep cleaning the home every 2 weeks on Saturday mornings. I, of course, vacuum, do the laundry, dishes, and daily cleaning through out the week, but having the kids and my husband take part makes them realize when things start getting a little messy. I’ve also started making my own cleaning supplies at home so we aren’t consuming as much plastic.
3. Paint a Room
Paint is magic in a can! I love using paint to completely transform a room! I’ve written several posts on wall color if you’re looking to refresh your home. You can see my favorite coastal colors here with lots of real life images.
Our home has original dark woodwork which I fell in love with the minute I saw it, but it took me a while to select just the right paint colors to highlight the beauty of this old wood. This is one of my most-read posts.
I’m also a big fan of white paint! You can see all my favorite white paints by clicking the button below.
4. Paint a Piece of Furniture
Do you need to re-love a piece of furniture? I’m a huge fan of paint for a tired piece. In fact, I’ve painted many pieces in our home that were a little tired (including the table above – which was broken when we got it). I actually wrote an e-Book all about Painting Furniture, click here.
In fact, if you’re new to my blog I’ve painted quite a lot of pieces with Milk Paint, Chalk Paint, Fusion Mineral Paint, and have tried all kinds of waxes and stains. I love old furniture because I think it adds so much character to a home and it’s so well-made! You might like this post on 10 Ways to Paint a Dresser, but there are loads more ideas below (10 years worth of ideas)!
5. Mix in Some Vintage and Antique Finds
Speaking of old things, I love adding vintage and antique finds to our home. It makes a home feel warm and inviting! You might also like our antiquing adventures in Maine, click here.
6. Bring in Some Plants
I love, love, love plants and have them in EVERY room. I believe they’re a real mood booster and some can increase oxygen in the room! We added loads to John’s small bedroom, see them here.
I love pothos and swiss cheese plants for super easy to care for ideas. Air plants are pretty easy, too.
You could make your own terrariums which is a fun winter project.
7. Add Texture
There are so many ways to add texture to a home from Roman shades to baskets and woven rugs or woven mirrors. I rounded up a bunch of ideas below.
Well, I hope that’s given you a few ideas on refreshing your spaces for the new year ahead. What’s one room you want to tackle or one goal you want to achieve? I’d love to hear! Leave a comment below. Or if you have any questions about our home, DIYs, or any sources just ask away!

Great ideas, Danielle! I’m looking forward to seeing your new home gym. And ideas for your kitchen! I hope to finish my kitchen remodel this year. It’s 90% finished. The remainder of work is all DIY stuff I have to tackle. I’m an expert at starting projects, but not very good about finishing them! 🙂
Well, the gym is the old playroom but we’re all LOVING the Pelaton. Ha! Ha! The kitchen is going to be a long process but excited to start planning. You must be thrilled with your new kitchen!
