Friday Favorites (47)

I feel like this summer is flying by. I can’t believe it’s already July 26th! I’m not sure how that happened. Between the kids’ busy schedules – sailing, drama, art, and work. It’s been a very busy summer. I’m hoping to get a few more beach days and fun day trips in August before John leaves for RISD. How’s your summer going? It’s time for Friday Favorites and I have lots to share this month!

Sunrise at Scituate Lighthouse

Favorite Day in Boston

Our family was visiting from Australia. It was a really really quick weekend visit when they hopped between British Columbia and Iceland and they came to stay with us for two nights. We went to see the Red Sox play at Fenway and it was a wonderful game. It was HOT and sunny and the Sox won. Not bad for their first baseball game ever!

Favorite Games

Ian (Luke’s brother) and Sarah taught us two games while they were here and now I’m obsessed! We played bananagrams and cribbage. We loved them both so much we got our own sets to play with the kids. These are both really great for traveling too.

Favorite Memory

Each year (ever since our boys were little) we’ve gone blueberry picking in our town. There’s a wonderful spot in Scituate called Tree Berry Farm and it’s such a fun morning. We went really early to pick and had a blast. We picked so many blueberries. We are using them in smoothies.

This farm has been in the same family for four generations. The blueberries are super sweet and lovely. The first time I took John I was pregnant with Conor. It’s hard to believe how big he is now. You might like to try this Blueberry Coconut Cocktail recipe.

Favorite TV and Films

We’ve been watching a lot.

TV

Under the Bridge – This is on Hulu. We are only half way through. It’s very heavy but very well done. It’s set on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and centers around 14 year old Reena who goes out to see friends and never comes home. The series is based on Rebecca Godfrey’s 1997 book about a true story. Stars Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone.

Films

A Family Affair – This is on Netflix. Fun rom-com with Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron. She’s an older woman and he’s an actor and also her daughter’s boss. Lots of funny bits. Great for a date night in.

A Walk in the Woods – This is on Netflix. Wonderful film with a wonderful cast, based on Bill Bryson’s book. Robert Redford plays Bill Bryson as he attempts to hike the Appalachian Trail. Also staring: Nick Offerman, Emma Thompson, Nick Nolte. Really funny and heart-warming. It’s from 2015 so not new, but I’m not sure how we missed this gem.

Like Father – On Netflix. Starring Kelsey Grammer and Kristen Bell. She’s a workaholic and is left at the altar and ends up going on her honeymoon cruise with her estranged dad. Very funny.

Find Me Falling – on Netflix. Starring Harry Connick Jr. We really enjoyed this film set on a remote part of Cypress. He’s a famous rock star taking a break from his music career, but there are lots of suprises and twists in this story. Nice film.

Favorite Fried Fish

If you’re looking for wonderful fried fish come to the Town Pier in Scituate on Friday and Saturday nights. Miss Emily’s Food Truck does wonderful fresh seafood caught on the Miss Emily boat. So far we’ve had and LOVE the fish and chips and the halibut bites. We’re gonna try the lobster roll next time we go down. We love supporting local.

Favorite Day on the Cape

Last weekend we did a pop up at Scout Vintage which is such a lovely shop. Annick is so nice and has such a wonderful eye for clothes, French antiques, and home decor. We set up on the lawn outside and had so much fun. Some blog readers came and it was so lovely to see you all!

After the pop up we went to Scargo across the way and had a delicious dinner and sipped Scargo Spritz (a mix of Hendrick’s, Aperol, Prosecco, honey rosemary simple syrup, fresh lemon, soda water, and rosemary). I know it wasn’t on the cleanse we’re doing but we’re taking a few liberties. So far Luke’s lost 7 pounds and I’ve lost 4.

Favorite Healthy Meals

Speaking of the detox. We’re doing the 10 detox. This is the cookbook and it has wonderful meals. We enjoyed this the other night and had the rest for dinner the next night.

Spicy ground turkey over salad

We’ve actually decided to continue on the plan but will have the odd cocktail or dinner if there’s a special occassion. You may remember we did this detox back in 2017 with amazing results.

Favorite Books

Girl holding a book called Sandwich

I have some terrific books to recommend. I just finished Sandwich and got to see Catherine Newman speak at Buttonwood Books. I haven’t read anything before by her but it was funny, and moving, at times sad, and at other times had me laughing out loud. It centers around a mother who is in her early 50s, her adult children and her parents. They’re all on Cape Cod for a week together in a cottage they rent every year. They’re in Sandwich on the Cape, the mom is obsessed with making sandwiches, and the character is sandwiched between her kids and her parents. Catherine is so funny in person and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I also love the cover.

Books and magazines at the beach

I just started reading The Cliffs by J. Courntey Sullivan at Humarock on Sunday. I’m loving this one although I’m not too far into it. I’m looking forward to seeing her and two other authors speak at this Picnic Supper with Buttonwood Books and H Cole.

I really loved her book called Maine.

Favorite Beach Days

We’ve had two brilliant beach days on Humarock. A picnic lunch with John 4th of July week and then just me and Luke on Sunday. We even splurged and got an ice cream. Why does everything taste better at the beach?

Oh, I wish I had known you were in Dennis last weekend at your pop up. My husband and I were on the Cape then. We have a little place in South Yarmouth so, we are on the Cape a lot of the summer and know Scargo well! I would have loved to have met you in person :). Glad you are having such a great summer!

Hi Danielle! I just finished reading The Paris Apartment which you recommended some time ago! It was absolutely a page turner from the very beginning! I just got the Dutch House from the library but haven’t opened it yet.

Hi Danielle, I like all your Friday favorites. It’s fun to see what is out there and what others are enjoying. I have seen Dr. Mark Hyman on YouTube and he is always interesting with good advice. I, myself am trying to eat a more Mediterranean diet/way of life. It works for me because nothing is off limits with portion control and sensibility. I fail (cheat) with restrictions…lol My new favorite, and I may be late to the party, is “Rajiv Surendra” on YouTube. Oh! he is WONDERFUL!!! So kind and caring. You feel his honesty right through the screen.… Read more »
