Garden Shed
We built a garden shed in a week over the summer and I’m so excited to finally share some photos and more about the process. Here’s the garden shed:
Okay, I realize we already have a shed so you may be wondering why we need two sheds in our yard….
It’s a good question really. The other shed was a “She Shed” but became our pool house. That space is a an easy breezy coastal outdoor room with a little bar and built in seating. It’s perfect to retreat into to read or mix up a drink. In the winter we store the outdoor furniture.
This little garden shed is for Luke. We don’t have a garage so needed a space to store the lawn mower, the generator, the snow blower, gardening supplies and tools. I guess you could consider it his “he shed”. Ha! Ha!
This post will serve as a mini reveal as we still need to move two trees and do plantings around the shed.
Building a Garden Shed
We decided this would be a fun project to do as a family. Luke had the week of 4th of July off so we recruited our boys to help build it.
Making the ground level and building the base took the longest amount of time.
We all learned so much and it was very, very hot…
The walls seemed to go a bit quicker.
Back in the summer I shared a little reel of building it.
Did We Follow A Plan or Kit?
We looked into building plans and buying everything separately. I also looked into having a shed company deliver a shed for us to build. Both ended up being very expensive. Quotes ranged from 10k to 20k, which just wasn’t in our budget + I didn’t want the tool shed to look nicer than our pool house.
Here you can see the shed in progress:
We wanted a shed with a double door to make it easier to get the snowblower, generator, and lawn mower out easier. We also store our bikes in here. We also wanted a window for light and ventilation.
After much searching we decided the this 8 x 12 shed from Lowe’s. It came precut and flat packed and included everything except the paint, caulking, and shingles.
We actually got the PRO membership from Lowe’s which made the shed with delivery cost $1700. This price point was significantly lower than all the other options AND I really liked the look of the shed itself.
Why You’ll Love This Shed
- The price point
- The instructions were easy to follow and we put the shed together in a week
- No cutting!
- Most everything was included and delivered right to our door (Except for paint, roof shingles, and roof edging).
- It has a classic and timeless look
See the Before & After
I made a quick video of the building and painting process. See it here:
Location of the Garden Shed in our Yard
As you know, we also just had a patio put in. Now you can see the pool area / pool house from the patio and also see this part of the yard from the patio. I wanted a charming backdrop. Something that looked as if it had always been here.
This is the patio in progress:
The patio finished:
Styling the Shed
As I said this is still “in progress” and I won’t be able to share a full reveal until the Spring / Summer. This part of the yard was our vegetable gardens filled with bushes, trees, and two raised beds. Pulling all this out was quite an effort BUT we can’t move the elderflower bush or apple tree until they’ve lost all their leaves. I don’t want to kill them.
So you can see the trees in front of the shed currently.
Eventually we’ll have planting below so you won’t see the cinder blocks and we’re thinking of building a ramp in front of the double doors.
I wanted this shed to look sweet and calm for this reason we chose a creamy white. The white we chose was Crisp Linen by Behr. We actually color matched it at Lowe’s as we get the PRO discount. We ended up using two gallons (I wanted to have some left for touch ups). We did two coats. The finish we selected was matte. We decided to paint the trim, door, and shed all in one color to give a more cottage / farmhouse appeal.
Look what a difference the creamy white makes!
We opted for a gray roof shingle too. I didn’t want your eye going right to a black roof. I love the color of them.
The shed came with the black hardware and all the windows.
Simple Window Box Planting
I decided to also go very simple with the window box. I actually found this wire basket in the old shed we had that was falling down. I thought it would be so sweet filled with seasonal flowers.
For fall I opted fro these coral Mumms. They had an old fashioned quality and seemed to shimmer in the autumn sunshine.
I truly am NOT a fan of Mumms but there was something about these ones I couldn’t resist.
I got a coconut insert and simply placed the pots inside. For spring I will actually plant out flowers but I thought this would be easier for a short planting season.
This is a very simple look but simply love it!

I like the new shed!!! It does look “cottagey” . I can understand 2 sheds as I have one and would love another for all the garden tools. My BIG question to you is…..Why???? are you not a fan of mums? I think they are pretty!!! They are very hardy and easy. When they get leggy, just cut them back. In winter cut them all the way back and they will come back next year. They also would make good watercolor topics!!!! Nice shed.
Aw, thank you, Josette. I’m so glad you like our “cottage-y” shed. I don’t know why I’m not a huge fan of mums. I just feel like there are some other flowers that are so beautiful and I always feel sad when summer ends, but maybe I’ll try and paint some. I will be sharing some watercolor sunflowers soon! Hope you have a lovely Friday and weekend. xx
Luke’s “he” shed is adorable! I’d love to add something similar next to my raised bed garden. Maybe next year! In the meantime, I just erected a 13×20 “tent style” shed to store scrap wood, lawn mowers, snow blower, etc. She’s not the prettiest, but she’ll get the job done! Once everything is moved over from my barn to the new “shed”, I hope to set up a workshop/studio space in the barn. 🙂
Luke loves his new “he” shed. Ha! Ha! Your plans sound wonderful! Your barn would make a wonderful workshop and studio space. Amazing!
