Grain Sack Dresser (Before & After)

Well, it has been a little while since I’ve shared a “Before &After”.  My favorite kind of post!  There’s been a little going on over here!  But today is your lucky day!!!!

I’m so happy to share Conor’s new dresser with you.

I was inspired by the lovely grain sack fabric which has become so popular.

Rumpled grain sacks, with that little bit of aged patina and old world charm, look just so right and cozy in a home by the sea.  I knew this was the right look for Conor’s dresser.

I wish I had a before before picture, but I painted it the first time before I started blogging.  The first time around, I painted it in Linen White and put glass knobs on for our guest room.  My aunt gave me this set of furniture.  Two twin beds, a short dresser and a tall dresser.  It is rock maple so had that yellow tinge to it.  The really lovely part about this set is it belonged to my great grandmother.

John and Conor are now sleeping in the beds and the two dressers are in Conor’s room.  So here is the before photo I have with Linen White:

Far to girlie, especially for the boy who was upset about his pink room.

I started by stripping the paint off the top with Strypeeze Biodegradable Paint Stripper. Once, the paint was off I used the palm sander to sand it down, then stained the top with dark walnut stain by Minwax.  I love how rich it looks!

The dresser got two coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White.  Then it was time for the grain sack stripes.  I thought off centered would add something.  My trusty frog tape for delicate surfaces came in handy!

Then I distressed the whole thing to give that worn in look.  I finished off with two coats of clear wax (no buffing as I wanted a matte, old world finish) and Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil on the stained top.

The knobs are by Target and I love how they play up that rustic, country-style with the oil rubbed bronze.

My little guy is loving his new and improved grain sack dresser.
