Halloween Mantel (2014)
Boo!
Did I scare you?!? If not, maybe our Halloween Mantel will!
The boys have been dying to decorate for Halloween. Dying. So, that is what we did over the weekend and we had so much fun. I’m a HUGE halloween fan. I LOVED it growing up. My mom always made me the best costumes. My kids aren’t so lucky because most of theirs are bought but they still seem pretty happy.
Trick or Treating is really big in the harbor, Front Street is closed and the merchants open their shops and give out candy to all the children. It really is so fun! Here’s a photo of us trick or treating in the harbor (a few years ago):
I’ll be sure to share some photos, the day after Halloween of the trick or treating this year!
Anyway, getting back to our spooky mantel –
I wanted it to tell a little story. Simple black and white. Paired with affordable things we had at the house or got at Target or the Dollar Store.
The crows were from the dollar store a few years back but we picked up a few more. You can never have enough crows, right?!?
I had planned to cut out a million bats on the kids’ construction paper. BUT Target had these adhesive bats for $5 for the entire pack. So why would I bother DIY-ing it?!?
John loved helping me stick these up!
I wanted it to feel like the bats were coming out of the fireplace. A bat once (actually it happened two times) flew out of our fireplace and it is so scary. I really have an issue when things from nature flapping in my house. The first incident happened our first weekend in our first house and we had to call the police since we’d spent two hours trying to get it out of the house!
But I can deal with faux bats. I even put them up over our TV but I usually crop the TV because I don’t like seeing it (it is just to the right of the fireplace).
So what do you think of our mantel? Are you decorating for Halloween?
I think I might actually be sad to take these bats down.

Love how this looks, Danielle! Definitely not worth a DIY when you can buy a whole pack for that cheap. And I can’t believe you have had bats in your house twice! Eeeeeeek! I am NOT fan of the wildlife indoors either.
I love that your mantel is already rustic looking & with the added black accents, birds & bats the effect of them flying out is so real! Pry one of my favorites yet & it’s ‘realness’ of spooky appeal is spot on !

LOVE the bats! Decals are the best! Actually, I love anything Halloween…I’ll link up my mantle at your Sunday party!
I LOVE IT! Just the perfect amount of spooky touch. I am the worst blogger and Halloween lover ever for skipping Halloween decorations inside the house this year. Right now the house is all set up for a Garden party bridal shower instead of my favorite holiday ever.
