Hand-Made Holiday: Dog Biscuits

This is our little Poppy.  Well, Poppy isn’t so little – she is 43 lbs – much bigger than the 18 lb puppy we brought home nearly a year ago.  She is such a loving dog and our home wouldn’t be the same without her!  Anyway, we couldn’t forget the four legged member of our family this Christmas, so the boys and I decided to make her dog treats in our next installment of Hand-Made Holiday.
Our Pop-i-licious LOVES cheese!  She eats slices when I cut some for the boys.  So I found a recipe for Cheddar Dog Treats on the internet at Taste of Home:
Cheddar Dog Treats
Prep: 15 min. Bake: 15 min. + standing
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese
1 tablespoon butter, softened
1/3 cup milk
Directions
In a small bowl, combine flour and cheese. Stir in butter until
combined. Gradually add milk just until moistened. Turn onto a
lightly floured surface; knead 8-10 times.
Roll dough into a 12-in. x 9-in. rectangle; cut into 3-in. x 1-in.
strips. Place on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 15
minutes or until golden brown. Let stand in the oven with the door
slightly open until cooled completely. Store in an airtight
container. Yield: 3 dozen.
It says the recipe makes 3 dozen, but our batch only made about 12 biscuits.  We may have done something wrong.  John and Conor had so much fun making these treats for Poppy.  They grated the cheese:

While Poppy waited for some to fall on the floor:
John rolled out the dough and we used dog shaped cookie cutters that I got a Michael’s to cut out the cookies.
And here is how the dog treats came out.
I’m not sure if Poppy likes them or not.  She buried several outside and I did see her eat one.  I tried them and they actually tasted good – cheesy biscuits.   She really is a Southern gal (originally coming from Virginia) and loves her beef and chicken jerky which she gobbles straight out of the packet.    Next up we’re going to try Martha Stewart’s Izzy’s Apple-Cheddar Dog Biscuits and package them up for her and her other four-legged friends for Christmas.

this is a great idea! We used to bury pills in a ball of cheddar for my old dog bc that’s the only way we could get her to eat them.

I just love that I see you making things with your boys! We spend so much time here getting creative and using our hands to make gifts from the heart! Always so happy to see other families enjoying the same!
