Heirlooms

You say tomato and I say to-maaa-toe!
Well, in our house I say to tomato and everyone else says to-maaaa-toe!  This week I’m whole heartedly embracing autumn – changing up the decor in my home, kissing summer good bye and wrapping my whole heart around all the deliciousness that is being harvested.

Over the weekend we joined my friend Cindy at The Roman Table and Rebecca from Sweet Georgia P’s for an Heirloom Tomato Tasting down in Scituate Harbor.  Sweet Georgia P’s heirlooms pair perfectly with The Roman Tables’ fantastic balsamic.  They go together like milk and cookies, like basil and mozzarella, like hot fudge and ice cream.  Well, you get the point.

My youngest, Conor, simply adores his tomatoes.  He ate a plate at the tasting and the next day at our CSA pick up consumed two more plates.

Well, after our little tasting I was inspired.  Inspired to truly taste the goodness of these wonderful organic fruits.

I made Luke and I a simple, delicious and organic lunch.  I started with a bed of lettuce, slivers of peppery radish and sliced heirlooms.  Then I included some of these.

Do you know what they are?

They are husk cherries or cape gooseberries.  They grow in this protective paper shell; it always reminds me of Chinese lanterns when I pop them open.  They are like fragile little presents that rustle in your hand.

Husk cherries are close cousins to the tomatillo but they are so much sweeter.  I hear they make amazing jellies and other delicacies but I can never get further than topping my salad or eating them straight out of the carton.  So sweet!  I know you’ll love them.

I included my beloved husk cherries and just a very tiny drizzle of black current balsamic from The Roman Table.  This balsamic is sweet and thick and rich.  It also pairs nicely with roast Brussels sprouts at Thanksgiving!

I am enjoying this delicious autumn.

I swear I had no idea that it was edible…wow. I so want to try it ! I’m loving my basil right now and made some basil oil…yummm, that’s what’s on our table…xo

Oh, how did I miss that post this week? Fabulous salad, Danielle. I had no idea they were edible either but I will definitely be trying them now.

Tomatoes are the best. It seems they are in every dish I make in some form or another, lol.

I’m laughing at the thought of your children saying tomaaaato like your husband !?! Your salad looks delicious and I’ve never heard of the husk cherries.
