Homemade Doughnuts

Is there a better aroma than homemade doughnuts? I made these the other morning and the whole house smelled of butter, cinnamon, sugar and vanilla! Talk about cozy comfort!

Fresh baked doughnuts remind me of my dad. He’d always get fresh baked doughnuts on Saturday mornings when I was little. I would always opt for the glazed or the lemon filled. My mom wasn’t a big baker so we never made doughnuts at home.

A few months ago, we got a doughnut pan up in Maine and now I’ve decided the ONLY doughnuts to eat are homemade – I hate to admit this but I ate three doughnuts in the process of creating this post. Ha! Ha!

I’m sharing this post as part of the Cozy Living series hosted by my friend Jennifer over at Town and Country Living. I couldn’t think of anything nicer or cozier than warm homemade doughnuts on a cold February day. Slow comfort served warm at home! Be sure to visit all my friends at the bottom of this post!

What Makes These Doughnuts Special?

These doughnuts are baked in the oven for 17 minutes and when they come out they are so soft and delicious. These doughnuts are much lighter than the greasy fried doughnuts you might find at a donut chain.

FAQ – Questions about baked doughnuts

What’s the difference between baked doughnuts and store bought doughnuts?

Most store bought doughnuts are fried and have processed ingredients.

Are baked doughnuts healthier?

Yes, fried doughnuts often have over 250 calories and are laden with oil. Fried doughnuts are cooked in oil while baked doughnuts are not, they are baked in the oven like a muffin.

How many days will these keep for?

In our opinion, it is best to cook these fresh when you want to enjoy them. They taste so lovely warm out of the oven with sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar.

How can I prevent baked doughnuts from sticking?

Use a baking spray with flour.

Does the pan really matter?

Yes, for baked doughnuts a good pan makes all the difference. We use a commercial grade, heavy gauge pans are made of aluminized steel. The dough cooks evenly and we’ve never had an issue with sticking.

Do baked doughnuts taste as good as fried doughnuts?

Yes! They actually taste better, according to my husband and sons!

What You’ll Need for this Recipe

You actually probably have many of the ingredients already in your pantry, except for the doughnut pan.

  • Doughnut Pan
  • Flour – basic all purpose flour works great for these doughnuts
  • Sugar – granulated sugar is best!
  • Baking Powder
  • Cinnamon
  • An egg – lightly beaten
  • Whole Milk – we love getting Hornstra Milk delivered from the milkman each week
  • Butter – use unsalted and Kerrygold is our favorite!
  • Vanilla extract
  • A wire rack
  • A baking sheet
  • A shaker for to “shake on” your cinnamon sugar mixture

These taste the best served warm with coffee or tea or a giant glass of milk.
You can add the topping to the underside as well but we felt that adding sugar and cinnamon to just the top was perfect!
Alternative toppings – powdered sugar, frosting with sprinkles, make a glaze and drizzle over the top.

Good morning Danielle. I am going to order the donut pan! And I love Stonewall Kitchens. We frequently shop their shop in Camden, Me.
I have also purchased a pop over man, reminds me of the popovers served at Jordan’s Pond in Acadia, another favorite of ours when we go to Maine on vacation.
Hoping your weather improves!

Good morning! Thanks for sharing this much valued recipe!!! We love donuts! (who doesn’t) But we can do without the fat and the processed ingredients. We started off our chilly day with making these and you are correct: they are so yummy, soft and warm right out of the oven. Delicious with a cup of coffee or with milk. They held together greatly even with dunking them! Wonderful recipe! Thanks again for sharing! Keep the recipes and inspiration coming. We made two batches. One exactly the way you made and the second spread with Nutella: decadent! A bit messy but… Read more »
