How Can We Help?
Today I planned on sharing some fun and fabulous mantels that were linked up. That was before Friday happened. Thinking about decorating seemed a bit frivolous today. Instead I want to share some thoughts and a way to help. I’ll share some mantels later this week.
I can’t seem to get my head around what happened in the community of Newtown, Connecticut. I can’t imagine what the teachers, children, families, police and all at the Sandy Hook Elementary school have gone though and are going through.
Luke and I watched some footage on Friday night. We cried.
And we cried.
We cried for these babies who were killed.
All the while, I couldn’t help but think of my little babies. My two boys (aged 6 and 3). This weekend, I squeezed them tight. I held their small, innocent hands in mine. I looked into their eyes.
All weekend long the boys didn’t know what happened in Connecticut. As parents, we were unsure if we should discuss what happend with John. We decided to tell him that something horrible happened at a school in Connecticut. We thought it best he heard from us in case things were said by peers at school.
This weekend I found comfort in some blog posts from local friends. My friend, Cheryl, wrote this on her blog It’s Two AM. My friend, Ali, over at Scituate Daily Photo shared this.
I also found great comfort in reading this from my childhood hero, Mr. Rogers. I wish his show was still on because I think my boys would love it.
His website has some really great ways of discussing tradegy with your children. You can read more here.
As we come together as a nation and try to understand. There is so much we can do to be ‘helpers’ as Mr. Rogers says. The children of Sandy Hook Elementary need our help. The people of Newtown, Connecticut need us.
United Way has set up the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to help with resources and support services. By giving you can bring hope to this community. Click on the banner above for more information.
