It’s Important to Eat Your Dessert First

When I was little my dad always took me for ice cream.  It was my favorite thing to do with him.  I’d always insist on getting Peppermint Stick (because I liked the happy pink color) and in a cone (because I was a big girl).  The ice cream would always be dripping down my hand and arm and he would have to lick around the edge.  For my entire childhood, my dad worked in Brigham’s corporate offices and I used to love going into work with him.  Not only did I like helping my dad in the office, but it also meant we’d get to sample the ice cream before it was hard packed into the gallons and quarts.  Fresh made ice cream is so delicious.  I’ll never forget the consistency and the creaminess.

Well, I think I’ve passed the ice cream obsession onto my children.  We are big ice cream lovers in our house; must be because I ate loads with both pregnancies.  It doesn’t matter if it is 90 degrees and sunny, torrential rain or the middle of a snow storm.  I’m always up for ice cream and so are my kids!  Ice cream always has a way of fitting into the cracks, no matter how full you may be.

Nona’s celebrated their 10th anniversary this year and we’ve been regulars since we moved to Scituate four years ago.  The shop is filled with brightly painted furniture, walls with faux finishes, bright blue and purple bathrooms, gorgeous black and white photos of children eating ice cream (is there anything cuter?) and, best of all, filled with tons of mouth watering ice cream flavors.  When you walk into Nona’s, you’ll immediately smell the fresh made waffle cones wafting in the air.  They are light and crispy and, of course, better than anywhere else.  My son, John, loves Johnny B Good because he thinks it was named after him, but he also enjoys their Chocolate and Fudge Ripple.  As far as John is concerned the more chocolate the better.

Inside Heaven: Nona’s Homemade in Hingham.

The ice cream is so rich and creamy and made on the premises with the freshest ingredients.  That is the secret to their fantastic ice cream.  One of my favorites is Hurricane Madilyn, it is decadent.  The White Chocolate Chip is divine, Nona’s Oreo is filled with chunks of cookies and their SS Cheesecake seems to have a whole strawberry cheesecake mixed in with the vanilla ice cream.

Nona’s ice cream pies are to die for!  We’ve had so many over the years for birthdays and anniversaries.  They have so many flavors to choose from and will write a personalized message on top.  Nona’s is also able to custom-make any cakes or pies with some notice.

We love catching the Nona’s Homemade Ice Cream Truck at the beach or the Cohasset Farmers Market and think we may have to get it to come to one of Conor’s birthday parties when he gets a bit older.

Nona’s is family owned and operated and I’m sure they’d like to see your family visit soon.  Who knows, you may see us there!
