Jameson (Before & After)
Meet Jameson, he’s my latest before & after:
An antique Paine & Co dresser that my friends, Dan and Kristin, found for their bedroom. Dan and Kristin’s style is impeccable and their home is filled to the brim with antiques and vintage finds. I’m hoping to actually snap a few photos of their home and share it on the blog because I think you guys will fall in love. They have collections of books, the best liquor cabinet from an old ice box and fabulous furniture. Even their 5 year old daughter collects tea cups. It is just amazing to walk into their home.
They asked me to help them with this dresser. Here’s how it was looking before:
We decided on a dark top and Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Artissmo. I first stripped the top with Citristrip and had incredible results. This wood is so gorgeous. I ended up just using several coats of hemp oil on it instead of staining first.
The body was painted in two coats of Artissmo and it is the most wonderful, rich blue. Think of a gentleman’s club with soft leather chairs, sparkling crystal decanters, worn books, velvet curtains and you get the idea of this color. It is deep, and rich and perfect against dark wood.
We wanted the chippy look so I didn’t apply the bonding agent to the two coats of paint. So it really chipped and flaked a lot. I was a tiny bit nervous that they would think it was too much.
Especially at this stage, when it was peeling off in sheets. I was ready for this though and was hoping for the chipping. I sanded the drawers a bit before painting but they were pretty scratched and in rough shape.
After painting, I used my scraper and removed all the loose paint and then I vacuumed the entire piece to remove paint flakes. Then I used a sanding block just to be sure, then vacuumed again. Two coats of MMS Milk Paint Clear Wax were then applied.
And here is Jameson in all his chippy glory:
Doesn’t he look like he was found this way? Just what we had hoped for. Another antique to add to their fast collection.
I love all the elegant detailing. Doesn’t that look like a greek pattern on the middle drawer?
Oh, and the pulls, the lions head brass pulls are from D. Lawless and look amazing on this piece.
I also must mention Dan’s wonderful shop, Gentleman and Daughter Antiques in North Scituate. If you’re in the area you really must stop by. So many great treasures and my Rosalind dresser just sold from there. I’ll be bringing another dresser down soon.
So what do you think of Jameson? Perfectly aged like the whiskey?!? I’m in love with him. So glad I could help Dan and Kristin out!
this might be my favorite piece of yours EVER. big fat swoon.
Gorgeous!! I don’t think I’d want to give him back to the owners though. 🙂
BEAUTIFUL-NESS!!!!
Thank you, Michelle!
I would be afraid of how much it chipped, too, but it looks absolutely perfect on this piece! Absolutely LOVE that blue against all that dark wood! So, so pretty!

I absolutely love the look of this, the chippy shabbiness is gorgeous, and that beautiful blue really sings out against the dark wood. I love the lion head pulls too !

It’s stunning! I love Artissimo!
It really is a beautiful color. Can look like a gentleman’s club but also beachy. I’m working on a little beachy side table right now.
Perfectness! Distressing and the pulls are gorgeous!
Such a rich, dark blue – perfect for that mens’ club look. Love the deeply distressed finish you achieved.
WooooW, Gorgeous! You do beautiful work and inspire me, thank you! Did you sand the base of the piece at all prior to painting?
Thank you! I lightly sanded with a sanding block. I know Marian sands with a palm sander if she wants to control the chipping more.
Most definitely a wow Danielle!
Umm.. Yes he’s very handsome! The finish turned out perfect!
Danielle, Simply Perfect!
HI Danielle,
Of all of the milk paint dressers I’ve seen thus far, this is the best one. The piece is just magical. I’ve been meaning to comment on it for some time… every time I see it, I just can’t take my eyes off of it. The paint color choice was perfect. Great job!!

Your lovely finish has inspired me to do a hutch with milk paint. I love the balance of wood top with just enough wood showing on the rest of the dresser to add warm patina. Did you strip the lower part of dresser before you applied two coats of milk paint?
Hi Gail, I’m so glad you like how this piece came out. It is certainly a favorite of mine! I stripped the top with citristrip and used hemp oil to seal the top. For the lower part I didn’t strip. I scuff sanded and cleaned the sandy dust off before painting! Then sealed with bee’s wax. Hope that helps! Danielle xx
